Rameshwaram Temple is the holy pilgrimage temple of Lord Shiva,the largest temple in Tamilnadu around 36 theerthams in this temple. Lord Rama and Sita made the Lingam in Sand and they were blessed by Lord Shiva in this temple
Location of Rameshwaram Ramanathaswamy Temple
Rameshwaram Ramanathaswamy Temple is located at Rameshwaram in Ramanathapuram District. The Temple is situated in Rameshwaram Island in the Pamban bridge across the sea, at the Sethu coast of Tamilnadu. This is the biggest temple of having 36 Pushkarni Theerthams in Tamilnadu.The story of Lord Shiva, who located the Sivalinga in this place after a victory between Rama and Ravana. So the place called as "Rameshwaram".
About Rameshwaram Ramanathaswamy Temple
Lord Rama stayed here before and after his battles with the King Ravana in Sri Lanka. The Main Idol of this temple is Lord Shiva as "Ramanathaswamy" and Goddess Parvathi as "Malaivalarkaadali". This temple is the famous pilgrimage and Shivasthalam centre in Tamilnadu. The area of this temple is 15 acres in the location of Pandiya Naadu. The temple has high Gopurams, heavy walls, 4000 feet long pillars, nearly 4000 granite pillars and situated across the sea. The Nine levels of Rajagopurams of this temple is across 126 feets. The Lord Nandi image is about 18 feet tall and 22ft length in this temple. The Construction of this temple started in 12th century. The theertham in this temple from each well water is in different tastes with different names.
History of Rameswaram Temple
Lord Rama requested Hanuman to bring the Sivalingam for Pooja. Hanuman went to bringing an idol of Viswanathar lingam from Banaras. But Hanuman didin't return soon. So Rom worshipped Lord Shiva in the form of a Shivalingam made of sand in earth by Sita. Hanuman make delay to return and after reached, he saw the Lingam in earth made in Sand. He got anger and tried to disconstruct Lingam. But he cannot able to do Lingam any more. It is the legend that Rama made the Lingam here and the place called as Rameshwaram. Sambandar, Appar sung a song in this temple.
