Vivekananda Rock Memoroial is located on the Seashore about 500 meters away from the beach, which was built by the Vivekananda Rock Memorial Committee in honour of the trip Swami Vivekananda made in 1892 to meditate at the Shri Padaparai.


About Vivekananda Rock Memorial in Kanyakumari


Vivekananda Rock Memorial at Kanyakumari, standing on the two rocks about 500 meters off the mainland is a popular tourist attraction of India. This is placed at the southern most tip of the Indian Mainland at Vavathurai in Kanyakumari District of the state Tamil Nadu.
This Rock Memorial was constructed to honour the visit of the well known great spiritual leader and teacher Swami Vivekananda in the year 1892 when he came to visit the Shripada Parai. He had come for deep meditation and enlightenment. He swam to this rock and meditated till he attained enlightenment and hence from that day became a reformer and a philosopher.
Vivekananda rock memorial was constructed in 1970 by the committee for the Vivekananda rock memorial. The Rock Memorial at Kanyakumari was inagurated by the then President of India.Sri V V Giri in September 1970.

About Shri Padaparai in Kanyakumari


There is a Shri Pada Parai , where in you can find a shrine constructed at the spot where the foot print of the Goddess Kumari Amman is seen on the rock. Arom the early times this Shri pada parai has been regarded as a sacred place. According to the puranic traditions , it is known that this shri Pada Parai, literally meaning, rock blessed by the touch of Goddess's feet. You can see a foot print on the rock which is a little brownish in complexion. It is said that Kumari Amman did severe penance standing on this rock.

About the Vivekananda Mantapam at Kanyakumari


There is a meditation hall known as Dhyana Mantapam is attached to the memorial for meditation purposes of the visitors. You can find different styles of architecture from all over India which have been incorporated while designing the Mantapam.There is a statue of Vivekananda inside the mantapam and you can see the sangamam / merger of the three seas, the Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean from the Dhyana Mantapam.

The Vivekananda Mantapam consists of Dhyana Mantapam, Sabha Mantapam, Mukta Mantapam and the Front Entrance .
Dhyana Mantapam is the meditation hall with six rooms attached.
Sabha Mantapam is the assembly hall which includes Pralima Mantapam or the statue section, two rooms, a corridor and an open courtyard / Prakaram which goes around the Sabha Mantapam.

Front Entrance is where there steps with two rooms as well as corridor just below the steps known as Prajakta.

The Shripada Mantapam is a square hall consisting of Garbha Grham, Inner Prakaram, Outer Prakaram and an outer platform. Both of these , Vivekananda Mantapam and the Shripada mantapam are designed such that the statue of Swami Vivekananda can be seen facing the Shripadam where he had come to meditate.

Ferry Fee - Rs 20 for adults
Rs 10 for students
