One of the heritage sites of Tamilnadu, which have a temple built by Rajendra Chola son of Raja Raja Chola.
Gangaikondacholapuram was the capital city of the king Rajendra Chola who is the son of Raja Raja Chola who built the Tanjore Big Temple. Rajendra won the kingdoms near the river Ganges and got the name Gangakondacholan.
The city of Gangaikondacholapuram, in Ariyalur District was found by the king as a mark of victory of the Ganga Dynasty. (This is just a village now, which was once a big city). Gangaikondacholapuram served as the Capital city of the Cholas for almost 250 years. The city was huge and well planned and built and had a huge outer wall to protect.
The city got destroyed (though the temple remains intact), during the 13th century when the Hoysalas conquered the Chola Dynasty.
Places to Visit in Gangaikondacholapuram Gangaikondacholapuram Temple was built in the 11th century. The entire design of the temple resembles the Tanjore Big Temple. The temple was built after his victory of the kings in the North India, especially the Ganga Dynasty and the Pala kingdom.
