Festivals of Madurai

Madurai can very well be considered the Festive City. So many festivals, of different colours and connotations, are celebrated all round the year in Madurai. Among the greatest festivals of Madurai, we can name the Pongal Festival, the Chithirai Festival, the Avanimoolam Festival, and the Navarathri Festival.

Pongal Festival

The Pongal Festival or the harvest festival of Madurai pays homage to the Sun-God, Mother Nature and the cattle as a gratitude for prosperity. The Pongal festival is held for 3 days amidst great grandeur. During the Pongal festival, on the first day called Bogi, houses are painted anew, and new household goods are purchased. On the second day, called Pongal, a sweet rice of the same name is prepared. Mattu Pongal is celebrated on the final day as the Tamil people pay their homage to the cattle for invoking good harvests.

Chithirai Festival

The Chithirai Festival is celebrated with great glory every year in the Tamil month Chithirai (April-May) on the Full Moon Day. There is a myth that on this day Lord Vishnu descended on earth and rode a golden horse on his way to attend the wedding ceremony of Goddess Meenakshi Amman and Lord Sundareshwara.

Avanimoolam Festival

The Avanimoolam Festival is the official coronation ceremony of Lord Sundareshwara. During the Avanimoolam festival, priests retell the tales of the miracles by Lord Sundareswara, that had protected Madurai from calamities and adversities.
