Thirumoorthy hills is a very popular temple located close to Udumalpet Tamil nadu. This is not only a devotional destination, a picnic spot and cinema shooting palce too. The famous and holy temple of Thirumoorthy is located at the base of Thirumoorthy hills near Thirumoorthy dam. The temple is the sacred residence of Lord Ammlingeshwara. The place is admired and hence visited by thousands of visitors daily.

Thirumoorthy hills location

Thirumoorthy hills is located at the distance of 50km from Pollachi and just 20km from Udumalaipet on the Palani-Coimbatore Highway. The temple is located at the base of the Thirumoorthy Mountain and it is believed that the Idols of Deity in the temple were originated on that same place.
It is the place preferred and liked by most of the hikers and tourists. But for the hiking purpose on Thirumoorthy hills, permission letter is required from the forest department. The major attractions of the place are Thirumoorthy temple, Pamjalinga falls and the Thirumoorthy Dam. The other tourist attractions are Amaravthy Dam and Amaravathy Crocodile farm which area situated near the Thirumoorthy hills. Thousands of visitors visit this exotic location daily. The temple is based at the foot of the hill but to see the Panchalingam falls, you need to climb nearly 2km distance. Many South Indian movies have used this beautiful location for their shooting. If you wish to visit Aliyar Dam or Anamalai Masaniamman Temple then short route is available from Thirumoorty hills.

How to reach

Coimbatore to thirumoorthy hills distance: 84km, It takes about one and half an hour to two hours to reach this place. To reach the Thirumoorthy hill Local buses are available from Udumalpet. Coimbatore International Airport is the nearest one to reach the location. You can go by train to Coimbatore or tirupur railway stations, from there you can reach pollachi and then to reach Thirumoorthy hills.

Temple history

The temple narrates the mythological story about the Athari Maharishi and his wife Anusuya, who was known for her Pativratyam and was blessed by Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva after testing her purity and greatness. This is the place where these three great Gods, Thrimoorthy blessed Anusuya for her devotion and truthfulness, so it was then known as Thirumoorthy hills. One can see the beautiful temple and old and rare idols of deities in the temple. Another story connected with the temple is about a Jain Priest who resided on the hills for the spread of Jainism. You can see the sculpture of the Jain priest on the huge rock which is considered and worshipped as Thrumoorthy. The most amazing thing can be seen here is the sculpture carved on the rock is upside down. It is believed that hundreds of years ago, during the time of flood this huge rock rolled down from the hills which made the sculpture upturned.

The climate of the place

The climate of the place is quite pleasant. It is neither very hot not too cold. The preferable time to visit the place is during September to December. The temperature of the place stays between 20 to 30 degrees and the rainfall is around 1550 mm.

Importance of the temple

People visit the place in huge numbers to visit sri Ammlingeshwarar temple which has a Lingam as a deity. The Hindu Customs like head shaving and ear piercing for babies are taken place here in the temple. After this custom, people prefer to take a bath in a stream near the temple. Special poojas on special occasions are performed in the temple throughout the year. The temple is opened for Darshanam from 6am to 6 pm.

Nearby attractions

Panchalingam falls are around 2km up from the temple and it is an exotic location for the nature lovers. Near the falls there is one more temple where earlier five holy idols were established. Because of this the fall has got religious importance. Many people take home the water from this dam to complete holy rituals. Thirumoorthy dam is located near the falls and now facilities like boating and swimming are made available to attract tourists to the place. It is the wonderful picnic spot with picturesque surrounding and pleasant atmosphere. From this place Crocodile Farm at Amaravathy dam is merely 25km away which is also a worth visiting place.
