Significance of Akshay tritiya

The day of Akshay Tritiya comes on the third day of the Hindu month of Vaishakh. The word Akshay is a Sanskrit word which means, 'The thing which never diminishes or ends.' Hindus believe that whatever we will invest or purchase on this holy day will never finish and it will grow day by day. This will bring lots of prosperity in the family. In the mythological story of Mahabharata, it is stated that Lord Krishna gifted the Akshaya Pathram' to the pandavas. This vessel has the powder of giving unlimited food for them. On this holy belief, people perform special puja for Goddess Lakshmi and purchase Gold or Silver or invest money in various projects. Another mythological story behind this day is about Sudama, the poor friend of Lord Krishna. He visited his childhood friend Krishna to ask for some financial help and he carried some 'Poha' with him to offer Krishna. Lord Krishna happily greeted him and ate the handful of Poha offered by him with great happiness. After returning to village Sudama found that his small hut was replaced by a big palace and his family was wearing good clothes and jewellery.

Sudama realized that this favour is done by his childhood friend Krishna. The day Sudama met Krishna was the day of Akshay Tritiya. So this day is considered as the best for helping others and performing 'Danam'. The day of Akshay tritiya is the birthday of Lord Parashurama, who is believed as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Thus this day is also known as Parashurama Jayanti. It is also believed that Akshay Tritiya is the day when Veda Vyasa started to compose the great Epic Mahabharata. And this day is the beginning of Treta Yuga.
