Tamil nadu is one the most important and famous state of south India. The state is well known for its rich culture and tradition. The wedding culture of Tamil nadu is elegant and it's a perfect symbol of Indian tradition. The wedding is taken place in the morning or in the night according to family wish and customs. The most important thing is Tamil wedding is the performance of traditional customs.

Marriage customs in Tamil nadu

People of Tamil nadu are known as Tamil people. The Tamil weddings are very simple but elegant. Tamil people don't believe in big and fat wedding ceremonies but they give importance to traditional rituals. Generally all the rituals are performed in the day time. It is custom to book a big marriage hall to perform all the customs. The marriage date is fixed with the advice of experts, elders in the family by referring Hindu calendar. Some dates are not considered as sacred for marriage ceremony according to Tamil tradition. On these dates marriage ceremonies are not arranged or fixed. The period between 15th July to 15th August, 15th September to 15th October and December 15th to January 15th is not considered good for marriage ceremony, this is followed by Tamil month calendar .

Tamil wedding food recipes

You can enjoy a big and tasty feast in Tamil weddings which is served in fresh banana leaf. The wedding food is prepared with lots of care and troubles. The quality of every food item is well maintained. The wedding food can include both vegetarian and non vegetarian food varieties. Tamil marriage dress and make up

In the traditional Tamil marriage the bride is seen in red colour saree with heavy gold jewellery and marriage hair style with full of flowers, ornaments on forehead, each body part of the bride is beautified with beautiful gold ornaments. Both the family give importance to select the muhurtham sarees and ornaments. Groom can be seen in white plain dhoti, with golden border and a white patta on his shoulder. The wedding dress of the groom is always plain silk garment.

Traditional Tamil brahmin marriage

Taking the blessings of the family lord from both the families, one day before the marriage day is an important ritual known as Panda Kaal Muhurtham. Pallikai Thelichal is the ritual where bride's family fills the earthen pot with grains which is sprinkled with water by the ladies of both families. After this ritual marriage songs and dances are performed. Next day when the grains in the pot get sprouts, these pots are left in the water to feed fish and receive blessings from the Fish – God.

Both the families invite Brahmin for feast and to receive sacred blessings for the bride and groom. This tradition is known as Naandi. Lord Ganesha Puja carries important role in Tamil weddings. During this ritual grooms family gives a sari to the bride which she has to wear during marriage ceremony. This is known as Nicchiyadharatham. The last ritual is Lagan patri, where the Brahmin reads out the marriage invitation card loudly in front of all to invite them for the marriage function and bless the couple.

Tamil marriage ceremony

On the day of wedding the bride and the groom are told to take a bath in their home at the time of sun rise. This is known as Mangala Snanam. Next custom is Kashi yatra, where groom pretends to be disinterested in sansara and wants to go to Kashi yatra. Bride's father stops him by requesting him to take the responsibility of his daughter. On this groom gets ready for wedding and returns back to home
Bride and groom exchange flower garlands in presence of all. Oonjal is the ritual which is performed after the exchange of garlands. Both bride and groom sit on the swing and married women from both the families give mixture of milk and banana for them to eat. Then the women in the family make a circle of rice balls in reverse direction to drive away all the evils.

Kanyadanam in marriage culture

Then comes the ritual of Kanayadanam, where parents of bride give the hand of their daughter in the hand of the groom by remanding the boy to take care of their daughter here after. This ritual is the symbol of parents giving their daughter's responsibility in groom's hand. The final ritual of Tamil marriage is Saptapadi, where bride gives her right hand in grooms hand and they both walk around the sacred fire. They take seven rounds of the fire. With the seventh round, the marriage ceremony is declared to be completed successfully!
