This is pongal festival 2015 celebration in Tamil nadu. Pongal festival comes by the second week of January, Tamil thai matham. This festival is celebrated for three days. The very famous pongal recipes called inippu pongal, ven pongal and pongal kuzhambu (mixed vegetable kulanbu) are prepared served at the time of worship.

Pongal festival is a grand harvest festival of Tamil nadu. When Sun enters the Capricorn rashi, this festival is celebrated in south India. As the festival is related to agriculture, it gives the message of prosperity. The word Pongal means a special type of sweet dish very famous in Tamil nadu is prepared on this festival. This festival is celebrated for 3 days.

Pongal festival 2015 celebration

The pongal festival is generally celebrated for three days. In some parts of south India it is celebrated for four days. People worship the Gods which bless them in their agriculture. The first day of the festival is known as Bhogi Pongal, the second day is Surya Pongal and the last and third day is known as Mattu Pongal. Some people celebrate the fourth day known as Kaanum Pongal. The celebration of this festival starts from 13th January to 15th January 2015.

What is bhogi pongal?

On the first day of pongal festival is Bhogi Pongal. On this day people worship Lord Indra, the rain God. Rain is necessary for agriculture and thus Lord Bhogi or Indra, the rain God is worshiped on this day to pray for prosperity. This day is the beginning of New Year for south Indians. On this occasion wooden and futile things in the house are burnt in bonfire. People clean house in the morning and beautiful rangolis are drawn in front of house. This special rangoli is called as Kolam. In villages these rangoli or kolam are decorated with cake of cow dung in the centre along with red and yellow flowers.

Surya pongal

The second day of the festival is Surya Pongal. Sun god is worshipped on this day as Sun plays an important role in the growth of crops. On the same day Sun enters the Capricorn rashi and it is the beginning of Uttarayana. The special celebration of this festival is done by farmers. They cook Pongal or Khichadi in a brass pot on specific Muhurtham. This dish is made with rice and moong dal. When the sweet pongal is ready it pours out of the pot, this signifies prosperity and lots of happiness in the family. Finally ghee and milk is added in the khichadi. Pongal panai is the pot in which pongal is cooked. In khara pongal preparation, cashew nuts, raisins, salt and black pepper is added in pongal to make it tastier. When the pongal is ready, it is offered to sun god along with jaggery and sugar cane. People also offer prayer to sun god.

Tamil mattu pongal

The third day of pongal is Mattu Pongal. On this day important farm animals like cow, bullock and buffalo are worshipped. Agriculture is totally dependent upon farm animals hence on this day these animals are given importance by worshipping them. On this day bullocks are decorated in a special way by tying a cloth around their neck and bull races and fights are arranged. The winner owners and animals are rewarded accordingly. For the races and fights on this day farmers train their animals' right through the year.

Kaanum Pongal and jallikattu

This day is celebrated in some parts of south India. It is the fourth day of the festival. On this day family members wish each other and give gifts to each other. Relatives are greeted and meet with love. Children get gifts from elders in the family. Feeding birds is an important thing done on this day. People offer khichadi to birds on banana leaf. Very popular bull game called jallikattu in tamil nadu is celevrated in the third day. People in and around Tamil nadi and even foreigners also visit the place called Alanganallur situated in Madurai see the jallikattu.
