Most commonly prepared diwali sweets are athirasam, mysore pak and badusha. Popular diwali snacks are thenkuzhal murukku and ribbon pakoda. You can try these two varieties of snacks which are prepared in almost every house on the occasion of diwali.

1. Thenkuzhal murukku recipe

How to make thenkuzhal murukku in tamil style? It is a very delicious and crunchy snack prepared with rice and urad dal flour. Here is the preparation method.

Thenkuzhal murukku ingredients
Raw rice: 2 cups
Whole Urad dal: 1⁄2 cup
Black ellu seeds or jeera seeds 1 tsp
Oil or butter to mix in flour
Salt and asafoetida
Oil to fry murukkus

Thenkuzhal murukku Preparation
To make flour: soak rice in water for 1 hour, wash and dry it in sunlight or in shade. Roast urad dal until it changes colour to golden brown. Mix both grains and grind them into powder. Make a fine flour of these grains. You can also preprare thenkuzhal murukku with coconut milk instead of adding water.

Thenkuzhal murukku Recipe: Add cumin seeds or sesame seeds, asafoetida, salt and little water in murukku flour and mix well. Heat oil or butter and add in the flour and mix properly. Now heat some water and add it in flour to make soft dough. Insert this dough in murukku machine. Now press the machine in circular order to make murukkus.

Heat oil in a pan and carefully put the murrukus one by one in oil. Deep fry the murukkus from both sides on a medium flame. Fry the murukkus until they turn golden brown. Remove ready murukkus from oil and spread them on paper to remove extra oil. After cooling down, store the murukkus in air tight containers. You can enjoy these murukkus for nearly 15 days.

2. Ribbon pakoda recipe Tamil style preparation

Ribbon pakoda recipe is also called as ribbon murukku. This is one of the easiest diwali snacks of Tamilnadu and very tasty to enjoy your evening tea time.
Boiled rice 1 cup
Bengal gram flour 1⁄4 kg
Red chillies 5 -6
Garlic 1 pod
Oil for preparing dough and frying murukku

Tamil ribbon pakoda recipe preparation
Soak rice for 2 hours and then wash and remove the water completely.
Now make a fine paste of this rice in wet grinder. While making paste add water, garlic, salt as per taste and red chillies along with rice.

Sift Bengal gram flour and keep it ready to use. Now take a bowl and mix rice batter, Bengal gram flour, asafoetida, hot oil and water. Make soft dough and keep it aside. Put this dough in murukku maker after putting ribbon murukku disk in it. Now heat oil in pan and press murukku maker in circular direction directly in the oil.

Deep fry ribbon pakoda from both sides, until they change the colour into golden brown. When the murukkus are ready spread them on a tissue paper to remove extra oil. After cooling down store these tasty and crispy murukku in airtight container.

You can also use Bengal gram flour and rice flour for making tasty ribbon pakoda, instead of using wet rice batter. This can save your time and efforts both. Just you need to mix both flours along with salt, asafoetida, salt and chilli powder and make a soft dough by adding enough water in it.
