Why this temple got the name Sankereshwari
Lord Shiva was popularly known as Shankar. Likewise Lord Paarvathy was popularly called as Eshwari in Tamil. Long time ago Kovilpatti was a dry place. So this town was affected badly by hot climate. Small babies were affected much due to this hot climate. Disease such as chickenpox were formed in that town. Affected children were placed under the shades of neem tree. Neem tree has ability to defend chickenpox. Few miles away villagers found a lump of neem trees. There they found a statue chipped as Sankareswari Amman. Now that area was turned into temple and still you can see the neem tree prevailing in that area. The history of the sculpture was not found still. Some say Sankareswari Amman sculpture was done by the kings ruled that area.
