Story of Madurai and Alagarkovil Kallagar Chithirai Thiruvila
This is a story about marriage between God Sokkanathar (Sivan) and Godess Meenakshi. Lord Alagar (Vishnu) is the brother of Meenakshi. Alagar lives at Alagarkovil hill located near Madurai. There is only few days for God Sokkanathar and Godess Meenakshi marriage. The marriage was planned to conducted at Meenakshi Amman Temple. Today is the day of marriage. Everyone was happy on that day. Alagar started his journey from Alagar kovil to Madurai. Mennakshi Amman temple was situated after the banks of river Vaigai. Alagar reached Madurai without any problem. Now he was shocked by watching the flood at river Vaigai. There was only few hours left to attend his sister marriage. Alagar was unable to cross the river. He came to know that the marriage function was over. Then he roamed across the Vaigai river. He stayed that night in Vandiyoor and returned to Alagar kovil in thief costume (Kallagar).
All this events were celebrated as Chithirai Thiruvila.
