Britishers, in 1801 named the city as Tinnevelly and also establish it as the Headquarter of Tirunelveli city.

Origin of name Tirunelveli

Town Tirunelveli is too referred as Nellai. In state's official language, 'Nell' is referred as rice fields. Words Tirunelveli and Nellai, and have relation with rice fields. The plaetoid shows that the city is enclosed by Rice Fields along with Tamirabarani river.This river provides water to the fields of rice. The origin of name "Tirunelveli" is concerned with Puranic times.

According to a theory, a enthusiastic man had a dream to live along with his family on the shore of the river Tamirabarani . But there was a dearth in the town and he had to plead and assemble rice from populace of the town.
