Free Distribution of Dhoties and Sarees by Tamil Nadu
The
Tamil Nadu government
has now finally decided to distribute free Dhoties and Sarees to the public on the lieu of
Pongal festival
. The
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister
made investigation towards the respective department about the production of Dhoties and Sarees to the public last week.
In 1981 under
former chief minister M. G. Ramachandran
the produced and stocked handlooms were purchased by the respective department by taking into consideration in providing job opportunities to weavers and to make the people residing in village and cities to be happy on the occasion of the pongal festival with distribution of free dresses. This scheme is one of the excellent scheme introduced to the public and could even act as a role model and sources of service for other states in India. The
Tamilnadu state
has its pride towards the origin of the scheme and even now the current government continues with the respective schemes of services to all set of peoples. In order to provide quality Dhoties and Sarees under former period of
Chief Minister Jayalalitha
she instructed the respective department to produce Dhoties and Sarees made of cotton along with polyester thread and as per her instruction towards the respective scheme the service is being followed till date.
Benefits and key Statistics
With
free distribution of Dhoties and Sarees
all the weavers would be benefited and provided with good job opportunities. According to the data a total of
170.84 lakhs Sarees
and
169.75 Dhoties
are required and the Chief Minister have instructed that all the required purchases should only be purchased from the Tamil Nadu and due to above news the Sarees and Dhoties distribution are being given as a business to Tamil Nadu weavers. As per the Budget allocated for the free distribution of Dhoties and Sarees the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister initially allocated
Rs 256 crores
for the project and now additionally Rs 4 crores has been allocated for the project. As per the obligation towards the sale rate by the weavers a long back to the local government the Tamil Nadu chief minister has decided to take it into consideration to make the weavers happy. Initially Rs 16/- was given for a Dhoti has now been converted into Rs 18.40/- and for Sarees the rates have been revised from Rs 28.16/- to Rs 31.68/-. Due to Tamil Nadu local Panchayat Election as a factor of consideration it was very difficult to hire thread involved in production of Dhoties and Sarees so the government announced it may take some more time towards production of respective clothes to be distributed freely to the public.
