    What is Puthandu?
    AS said above New Year in Tamilnadu is known as Puthandu (also known as Varusha Pirappu) and this day is marked as the beginning of Chithirai and is celebrated as the first month of Tamil Year.

    Puthandu celebrations, rituals
    Puthandu celebration in Tamilnadu stars in the early morning with adorning of entrance of houses with various very attractive Koalm designs. People use to visit temples and other religious places in Tamilnadu and wishesh for better health and joyful time throughout the complete year. Kanni custom is one of the very popular ritual and literally means the auspicious sight. After doing all these activities people use to read Panchangam.

    People celebrates Puthandu by wearing new clothes, making good food, sending gifts to their loved ones etc. peoples use to visit their relatives house on this occasion. Main highlight of Puthandu is the Big car festival of Tamilnadu which is held near Kumbakonam. Some other festivals are also conducted in some other parts like Tiruchirapali amd Kanchipuram. Chitthirai festival is also ver popular festival and is celebrated as the marriage of Goddess Meenakshi to Lord Sundaareswarar.
