District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forums


District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forums are specifically constituted by the government of Tamilnadu to address the consumer complaints.District Consumer Protection Council a branch under the Consumer Protection Act was established in each district of Tamilnadu in the year 1986 to address the concerns of the consumers. The main objective of this Redressal forums are to help the consumers who complain of any defective in any commodity they buy or deficiency in service provided to the consumer.

The Redressal Forums will try to replace the defective commodity or will ask the commodity provider to return back the money. This depends on the nature of the complaint and the possible ways that can be addressed to satisfy the affected customer. If the Redressal Forums failed to take action during the stipulated period, District collector will come into the picture to resolve the issue of the customer.

Types of complaints that can be registered with the Consumer Disputes Redressal Forums

  • Any product purchased from the shop is defective.
  • Unfair practice taken by the trader which may result in loss or damage to the consumer
  • Service provided to the consumer is defective and did not satisfy the consumer.
  • Trader demanding more price than the price displayed on the product.
  • Price of the product is more than the fixed price announced by the government or any law.
  • Hazardous goods sold without any proper safety to the public.

  • How to make a complaint at the Consumer Disputes Redressal Forums

  • Consumers can write their complaint in a plain paper and can submit it to the Redressal Agency in person or by post.
  • No stamp paper is required to file a complaint.
  • Consumers should make sure that they file the complaint within 2 years from the date of purchase of the defective product.

  • Documents and details to be furnished by the consumer at the Consumer Disputes Redressal Forums


    The written complaint should be supported by the documents and details that are required by the Consumer Disputes Redressal Forums in order to take action against the complaint. Below are the documents that need to be submitted along with the complaint.

  • The written complaint should contain the correct name and address of the consumer
  • Name and address of the trader against whom the complaint is filed.
  • Date of purchase of the defective product or the date and time of the defective service that was availed.

  • Supporting bills or documents as proof of the product purchased.

    Consumer Disputes Redressal Forums will try to address the nature of the complaint and will come to a solution based on the Consumer protection Act. Consumer can expect the resolution of the complaint under the context of the consumer protection act. The possible ways to resolve a complaint are

  • Completely replace the defective product
  • Remove only the defect from the particular product that was in question
  • Pay back the price of the product
  • Compensation provided by the trader to the consumer for the loss or injury suffered due to the defective product.
  • Remove the deficiency in the bad service provided to the customer.
  • Discontinue the trader who was charging excess price for the product
  • Remove the hazardous goods that are sold without proper safety measures
  • Pay the consumer the cost incurred to file the complaint


  • Different types of forums where consumer complaints can be registered


    Consumer can file their complaint at any of the different types of platform that are mentioned below. All the forums will try to address the consumer complaints irrespective of various departments that they work for. Consumer should have a brief look at the following councils before they file a complaint in order for speedy disposal of their complaints.

    District Consumer Protection Council
    Complaint filed by the consumers are processed at the District Consumer Protection Council. The complaint are processed by the concerned departments based on the type and nature of the complaint. The District Consumer Protection Council is directly headed by the District Collector.

    District Consumer Forum
    Consumers who would like to claim a compensation upto 20 lakhs can file their complaint at the District Consumer Forum.

    State Commission
    Consumers who would like to claim a compensation from 20 lakhs to 1 crore can file their complaint at the State Commission.

    National Commission
    Consumers who would like to claim a compensation of more than 1 crore can file their complaint at the National Commission.
