    Samayapuram Mariamman Temple at Trichy, Tamilnadu

    In Tamilnadu, worship of Goddess Mariamman is very famous. There are numerous temples for Sri Mariamman in Tamilnadu, in every village and city. Among all these temples, Samayapuram Mariamman temple, which is in Trichy is very important one. The details of this temple is given in this article.


    Location of the temple


    Sri Mariamman temple at Samayapuram is situated at a distance of nearly 15 km from Trichy district. It is in the Trichy-Chennai National highways.
    Trichy is well connected with all major cities of Southern India by road and rail.
    Trichy airport is at a distance of 5 km from the city.

    Specialities of Samayapuram Mariamman temple


    Being a very famous temple of Goddess Mariamman in Tamilnadu and more than 1000 years old, Samayapuram temple is said to be Adhi Peedam of all temples of Mariamman.
    Some of the specialities of this temple are given below.

    Sthala Virusham of this temple is Veppa maram i.e. Neem tree.

    People suffering from measles, smallpox etc. are staying here in a separate room and worshipping Her. The Abishega theertam (sacred water) of Sri Mariamman is given as prasadam to them and they recover very soon by Her grace.

    As Sri Mariamman protects her devotees in time (samayam), this place is called as Samayapuram.

    Vikhramapuram
    Makalipuram

    Sri Mariamman is controlling all the 27 stars and the nine planets (Navagrahas) and so poeple worship Her to protect themselves from the problems caused by the Navagrahas.

    The devotees worship the Goddess by carrying firepot on the hands, pulling the golden car, rolling round the temple corridor(anga pradhashinam) etc, as thanksgiving for Her grace.

    Divine beauty of Sri Samayapuram Mariamman


    Goddess Mariamman idol here is Swayambu i.e self- manifested and not made by anyone. The devotees would recognize Her divine presence in reality. The divine beauty of Sri Mariamman and Her grace console the worried people and bring peace and happiness in their life.
    Samayapuram mariammanShe is dazzling like a sun in red colour.

    She is in sitting posture, with her left leg folded and right leg placed on the heads of asuras below.

    She has eight arms (ashta pujam), with sevaral weapons in all her upper six arms.

    She holds a large sword in her lower right hand and a golden bowl with kumkum in her lower left hand.

    Flames of fire are surrounding her crown.

    Five-hooded snake stands like an umbrella over her crown.

    Floral garlands and jewels are attaining beauty by adorning Her.


    Festivals of this temple


    Chitrai Ther(Car) festival comes on April and is being celebrated for 13 days. Car procession takes place on the 10th day of this festival, which will be the first tuesday of the tamil month Chitrai. On the 13th day, float festival (theppam) takes place in the Theppakulam.

    Panchaprakaram festival takes place for 15 days during May.

    •Navarathiri festival for 9 days during the tamil month Puratasi (Sep/Oct).

    sri mariammanThai Poosam festival comes during the tamil month Thai (Jan/Feb) and is conducted for 11 days. Goddess comes in procession on various Vahanams and blesses the devotees. On the 9th day, Sri Mariamman goes to Srirangam for Theerthavari in the Cauvery river. Lord Ranganathar at Srirangam temple, the elder brother of Goddess Mariamman gives gifts to His sister. On the 11th day, Sri Mariamman returns to Samayapuram.

    Poochoridhal (flower showering) festival is celebrated on the last sunday of tamil month Masi (Mar). On this day, Goddess starts Her fast for 28 days called as Pachai patini viradham, for the welfare of all living beings. During these days, the main deity at the sanctum sanctorum is showered with various kinds of flowers. During these fast days, only rice flour, tender coconut, butter milk, fruit juices are offered to Sri Mariamman.
