    Aadi Festival Celebration


    Aadi masam or Aadi month is the Fourth month in traditional Tamil Calendar followed in TN.This Tamil month marks the beginning of all festivals during the festival season. In 2011, the Aadi Masam begins on July 17 and ends on August 17. But several Tamil Hindu rituals and festivals are held in the month of Aadi and therefore it is also auspicious to some people. The sun changes its direction during this period and next six months is the night time of the gods. Due to this reason, no auspicious events are held in the month. Traditionally, most people avoid auspicious ceremonies during this period. It is believed that the ceremonies held during this period will not have the blessings of the gods. But a few important celebrations and rituals take place in the Aadi month. This festival is special for various Ammans. Sundays, Tuesdays and Fridays of this month are considered very auspicious. A most important month for women. The most auspicious days are Fridays and Tuesdays in this month; these are called Aadi Velli and Aadi Chevvai and the Aadi Amavasa.

    Aadi karthigai(kirthigiai)
    This Festival falls on July 25th 2011. The festival is dedicated to Lord Muruga or Subrahamaniya. Incidentally, the festival is also referred as Aadi Krittika, Kirthigai Kritika and Krithika. The festival is celebrated with fervor in the Murugan Temples in Tamil Nadu. Special poojas and homos are performed to please muruga and kavadi yatra is main ritual of aadi karthigai day.

    Aadi Pooram


    This Festival falls on August 2nd 2011. This festival is observed to propitiate the goddess Sakti Devi who is said to have come into this world on this occasion to bless the people. People therefore worship her in order to secure happiness not only for themselves but also for their loved ones.

    If the festival falls on a Friday, the occasion is considered to be highly auspicious, and the people worship the goddess in a more special way.

    Aadi Perukku


    This festival falls on August 3rd 2011 and it falls on Eighteenth day in Aadi masam. The aadi month falls during the monsoon season and is essentially a thanks giving to monsoon .This festival is celebrated in full fervor by people residing along the Cauvery River bank. 'Perukku' means rising – indicating the rising water in rivers. The festival is essentially a form of Nature worship.

    Special food is prepared on this day and family and friends get together and pray for uninterrupted supply of water and a good harvest.

    Aadi Amavasai


    This festival falls on July 30th 2011 is No Moon Day dedicated for forefathers and dead ancestors

    Aadi Chevvai


    The Tuesdays in Aadi Masam is highly auspicious.

    Aadi Velli


    Fridays in the Aadi Masam is also considered auspicious.

    Varalakshmi Puja

    – This festival falls on August 12th 2011 is a popular Hindu ritual observed by married women in Tamilnadu. It is believed that worshiping Goddess Lakshmi on this day gives the benefits of worshiping Ashta Lakshmi – the eight goddesses of Earth, Learning, Wealth, Love, Fame, Strength, Peace and Pleasure. On the day, homes are cleaned and will be decorated with mango leaves and rangoli. Footprints of the goddess will be painted from the threshold to the place of worship, symbolically welcoming the goddess of wealth Mahalakshmi.
