Explore the unexplored in Tamilnadu - Details about Nambi Kovil in Tirunelveli, Tamilnadu

Tirunelveli - a land of rich culture, tradition, halwa, sickles and many unexplored landscapes. This article describes one of the unexplored, beautiful and a cool place - Nambi Kovil in Tirunelveli district which mystifies and refreshes you instantly.

Nambi Kovil

The temple for Nambi aandavar Incarnation of Lord vishnu) is situated on Nambi hill (Nambi malai), a part of the Western Ghats. It is nearer to a place called Naanguneri (an hour and a half drive from Tirunelveli Junction). Once you enter the base of the mountain, there would be a check post and only tourists and pilgrims are allowed (This is to avoid poachers and smugglers - Long time ago, diamonds were found and the area has been restricted).

It would be wonderful to go on trekking, enjoying the rich flora and fauna present there. Small streams and beautifully mould rocks and cute gorges just add to the beauty of the place. Wading through crystal clear waters just gives a heavenly feeling and relieves you from the stressful city life.

Monkeys and Langurs are a common sight there. Langurs never meddle with those who go on trekking but monkeys do. Be sure to safeguard food items as you may be robbed by monkeys. They'd be happy if you offer them something to eat but keep a watch as there may be a big monkey fight due to the food offered!

It would be great if you go along with friends and family and cook food there using firewood. Do not attempt to cook food if have no prior experience in handling firewood and smoke. It is an uninhabited area and hence food stalls will not be available. A stream runs beside the temple and usually people bathe in the stream and then go to the temple to offer their prayers. Usage of shampoos and soaps is strictly prohibited as it pollutes the water which serves as a medium of life for submerged plants and a variety of fishes. Also, the water has medicinal properties as it wades through a whole lot of rare medicinal plants in the mountains. The refreshing, chill mountain water is a treat to your skin and hair. Added to this, the mountain water tastes great too!

This place is open to visit on all days and it is spectacular on the day after Pongal (Sankranthi). Most of the people from the surrounding villages visit the temple and have their lunch. The food is usually placed on rocks which are cleansed using water from the streams and distributed to others (My mom usually does that and is called kootanchoru). It tastes lovely and I'd rate it above the most delicious and expensive food available on earth.

Near the temple, by the side of the stream, huge rocks are present; this is where people usually rest and have their food, kids play around and have fun. There are rocks which are placed in such a way that they make a good hideout. This is where women and girls usually change their dresses after a bath in the stream. When you stroll around the place, you can come accross unexplained beauties of the earth - water flowing by lush green ferns, colorful plants adding sheen to the water, beautiful slopes of the mountain and lovely fishes that tickle your toes.

And many more surprises awaiting you... So, the next time you vist Tirunelveli, please make it to nambi kovil with a huge gang of friends and family and loads of food. Please do not pollute the serenity of the place. The ideal time to visit this place is from September to February (Monsoon and post monsoon).
