This article is about the famous Vinayagar temple at Pillaiyarpatti - its location, deities enshrined and festivals conducted there. This temple has the specialities of Vinayagar with two hands and having Sivalingam in his right hand, which is rare to see in other Vinayagar temples.
Location of Pillaiyarpatti, Tamilnadu
The most famous rock cut temples in Tamilnadu is at
Pillaiyarpatti
, the town named after one of the names God Vinayaga, i.e Pillaiyar. The famous
Karpaga Vinayagar temple
is situated here. It is on the national highways from Thirupathur to Karaikudi. It is at a distance of nearly 14 km from Karaikudi. The nearest railway junction is at Karaikudi. Madurai airport is the nearest airport.

The statue of the main deity
Shri Karpaga Vinayagar
, which is six feet high was carved out of the rock. The sculptor who designed this statue had also carved his name under it. Generally, God Vinayagar is worshiped as having four hands. But here, Vinayagar has only two hands. In his right palm, a Sivalinga is found instead of his favorite
Modhaka
i.e(sweet ball). It is said that he is performing Sivapooja in yoga posture. Also his trunk is curling right inside, which is called as "Valansuzhi". The word
Karpagam
denotes the quality of fulfilling any desire. Since Vinayagar in this temple fulfills all wishes of his devotees, he is known as Karpaga Vinayagar. The tank in front of this temple is speaking the architectural excellence. These are the specialties in this temple which is rare to see anywhere. Other deities in this temple are Gods Thiruveesar, Marudeesar, Senchadeswarar and Goddesses Sivagami, Vadamalar mangai, Soundarya nayaki, Karthyayini.

The main ten days
"Vinayaga Chathurthi"
festival takes place in Aug/Sep every year. It is celebrated as the main
festivals in Tamilnadu
. During first eight days, the processional idol of Vinayagar will be taken in procession on various vahanas(vehicles). On the nineth day,
"car procession"
takes place and on the tenth day there is
"Theerthavari"
.Other festivals are "Thiruvadhirai festival" for the deities Natarajar & Sivakami amman during Dec/Jan and "Kongunachiamman festival" during May/Jun for the village deity Kongunachiamman.
