Maruthamalai, also known to be the Seventh 'Arupadai veedu' of Lord Muruga, a Hindu God famous over epics and especially over South India.This Temple has many notable features like 'Suyambu of Lord Muruga and his wives' ,Pambaati Sitthar Temple and Spring and Natural climate around it.
Maruthamalai Hill Temple
This majestic temple is located at a height of about 600 feet and is at a distance of about 10kms from the Coimbatore. It adds aesthetic value to the Coimbatore city.It is one of the oldest temples in South India.It has many unusual features within this temple. Famous Features of Maruthamalai Temple
In most of the
Hindu temples
, only Lord Shiva will appear as a Suyambu in Tamil(Self-made in English). But here in this Temple Lord Muruga with his wives Valli & theivanai also appear as 'Suyambu' structures. Another Great feature is that there is a the name of the Lord Muruga is called to be Dhandayudhapaani. This is because in this temple he holds a weapon called 'Dhanda'. This hill temple also has a temple and spring in the name of the mystic called
Paambaati Sitthar
. He is very well known in South India. He is also referred to be 'friend of Snakes'. He has also done many curative medicines happened due to Snake bites and had practiced many medicinal herbals for curing Diseases. It also serves as a good
tourist attractions in Tamilnadu
for Foreigners because of the natural beauty and the climate prevailing here. This temple has a special tree called
Marutha tree
and a source of water called Marutha sunai. This temple is notified to be the
seventh Arupadai Veedu
according to literature. This hill has 837 steps from the land to top for reaching this temple.
Some Special Occurences
During
Vaikashi Vizhagam
there will be a prayer to the Lord Muruga with a special bath using 108 vessels of milk. During Thai poosam there will be a function called
Brahmotsavam
for about 10 days. This hill temple is also known for its mind-blowing 'Prasatham'(food prepared specially for God) called Panchamirdham. It is very tasty and it is made up of many traditional fruits.
This festival is celebrated as one of the main
music festivals in Tamilnadu
