Prof. Vaiyapuri Pillai – a famous Tamil Scholar

Prof. Vaiyapuri Pillai, is one of the famous Tamil Scholar born in October 12 1891 at Chikkanarayanpettai , Tirunelveli District, Tamil Nadu. He is son of Mr. Saravanaperumal and Pappamma. Vaiyapuri pillai finished his schooling in St.Xavier's School at Palayam kottai and he finished his graduation at MDT Hindu College, Tirunelveli. Vaiyapuri pillai done his post graduation at Chennai Christian College. He got Sethupathi Gold Medal for Education, this medal was given to him because he got highest marks in Chennai district in his post graduation. Vaiyapuri Pillai interested in Tamil Language, so he wished to study B.L and he did this in Thiruvandram Law College.

Prof. Vaiyapuri Pillai started his career as a lawyer, he worked in Tiruvandram and Tirunelveli. When he was working at Tirunelveli, he made friendship with famous Tamil scholars like T.K.C Chidambarnatha Mudaliyar, Nilakannda Sasthiri and Prof Saranathan. Vaiyapuri Pillai wrote lot of Tamil Articles and books. He continues the job, which was done by U.V Swaminathan Iyer, Yes Vaiyapuri Pillai served for Tamil by manuscript and published lot of ancient Tamil epic and classics. In 1926, Prof. Vaiyapuri Pillai was the Editor Chairmanship for Tamil Dictionary development team in Chennai University. Later in 1936 he was the chief secretary of Chennai University Tamil Language Research Department, he made plenty of Tamil Scholar during his service until he resigned his job in 1946 . Prof. Vaiyapuri Pillai joined as Head of the Tamil Department at Thiruvangur University, where he got chance to work with Leksikon's word Directory He felt this was great experience in his Tamil language development service. Prof. Vaiyapuri Pillai was also working as principal at Tanjavur Tamil University.

Pro. Vaiyapuri Pillai was a great fan of Kammar who wrote Kammaramayanam, great ancient Tamil Epic. He love the writings of Kammar, so he wanted to start separate unit for developing Kammar's books and classics. Vaiyapuri Pillai Started "Kamban Kazhagam with Rasigamani T.K.C. In 1955 , Vaiyapuri Pillai published Divya Prabandam this is his greatest achievement Even he done huge service to Tamil Language, his wish to publish "Kamaramayanam" had not done by him until his death on 1956.
