UV Swaminatha Iyer – Famous Tamil Scholar

Uttamadhanapuram Venkatasubbaiyer Swaminatha Iyer is known as U.Vae. Swaminatha Iyer, was one of the famous Tamil Scholar, who born on Feburary 13th 1855 in Uthamadhanapuram nearby Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu. His father Venkata Subbu iyer was a leading Musician. Swaminatha Iyer done his schooling and music in his own city. In his 17th year he started learning Tamil from Thirisipuram Sundaram pillai, who is a teacher in Thiruvaduthurai Saiva Athinam. U.V.Swaminatha Iyer completely learned Tamil for 5 years and later he worked in a college at Kumbakonam in the year 1880, and then he worked for sometime in Chennai College. When he was working in Kumbakonam he made friendship with Salem Ramaswami Mudaliyar, Who gave idea to U.V.Swaminatha Iyer to edit and reproduce ancient Tamil Classics and Tamil poems. He manuscript Seevaga Sinthamani, a Jain Classic first. In 1887 U.V Swaminatha Iyer successfully published Seevaga Sinthamani , after that he published Pattupattu.

UV Swaminatha Iyer continues his publishing work, and he published more than 100 books including Tamil Classic, Poems, Devotional books etc. He published lot of important books, otherwise we may not have a single line from those books like, Cilapathigaram written by Ilango Adigal , UV Swaminatha Iyer one of five epic in ancient Tamil Literature, Manimegalai written by Seethalai Saathanar, one of the five Epic in ancient Tamil Litreature and Parananuru, one of the Pathinen melkanakku books of Sangam Period written by more than 150 poets, are published by UV Swaminatha Iyer . In 1919 UV Swaminatha Iyer retired and later he joined as a principal in Meenakshi Tamil College, Kumbakonam. Due to health problem he resigned his job in 1927 and he involved in manu scripting, Editing and publishing until his death on 28th April 1942.

Awards and Achievements of UV Swaminatha Iyer

In 1906, UV Swaminatha Iyer got honorary Doctoral Degree by the University of Madras.
In 1906 , UV Swaminatha Iyer got Mahamahopathiyaya Award – "Greatest of Greatest Teachers"
In 1925, UV Swaminatha Iyer got the Title Dakshina Kalanidhi
In 1940-42 Auto biography of UV Swaminatha Iyer En Sarithiram got published in Ananda Vikadan Tamil Weekly magazine and 1950 it was published as a book.
In 2006, Indian Postal Department released commemorative postage stamp with , UV Swaminatha Iyer photo.
