The Madurai district in Tamil Nadu (Tamil:மதுரை) is one of the districts of Tamil Nadu with Madurai as its administrative headquarters. Madurai is also known as the Athens of the East. The name Madurai means 'City of Sweetness'. A number of legends is associated with the name Madurai and one such legend narrates a story that once a farmer on crossing a forest (the forest was originally the Madurai known in the name of Kadambavanam) saw Lord Indra (king of cosmic Gods) worshipping a swayambu Linga (self created) and informed this to the King Kulasekara Pandyan. The king cleared the forest and built a temple around the linga and formed a city with the temple as its centre. Lord Shiva made his presence on the day the city was to be named and a few drops of nectar fell from his locks on the town and therefore the town was named as Madurai (Maduram means nectar). Madurai is the second largest city of Tamil Nadu and it is situated in the banks of the river Vaigai. In 1985 the Madurai district was bifurcated to Madurai and Theni Districts and in 1997 it has been splitted into two districts namely Madurai and Theni Districts. Madurai district is bordered by Dindigul and Thiruchirappalli on the north, East by Sivaganga, Theni on West and South by Virudhunagar. Madurai boasts for great epic work 'Silapathikaram' a masterpiece written by Elangovadigal on the story of Kannagi. Madurai is the cradle of Sangam literature and is rich in great tamil literary works.
