A number of festivals are celebrated in Tamilnadu. Pongal Festival, the Chithirai Festival, the Avanimoolam Festival, and the Navarathri Festival are the chief among them. All these festivals are celebrated in Tamilnadu will full enthusiasm among the people. In this resource I will discuss all the festivals celebrated in Tamilnadu in detail. I will also explain the significance of the festival and beliefs of people associated with each festival.

Pongal Festival, Tamilnadu
It is one of the most awaited festivals in Maduarai. Also known as the harvest festival of Madurai this festival recognises the importance of Nature and Society. It is celebrated for three days. On the first day there is a tradition of purchasing new goods and washing and painting the homes. The first day of the festival is also known as Bogi. The second day of Pongal Festival is called as Pongal. On this day people prepare sweet Rice Named Pongal. The last day of the festival is celebrated as Mattu Pongal. On this day importance of cattle is realised and they are respected.
Chithirai Festival, Tamilnadu
In Tamilnadu another festival called Chithirai Festival is also celebrated by a large mass. The festival is celebrated in the month of April or may on a Full moon Day. People believe that on this day Lord Vishnu came on earth and rode a golden horse to reach the wedding ceremony of Goddess Meenakshi Amman and Lord Sundareshwara.
Avanimoolam Festival, Tamilnadu
Lord Sundareshwara is worshipped by the people of Tamilnadu on the auspicious occasion of Avanimoolam Festival. It is believed that Lord Sundareshwara had protected Madurai from a number of natural disasters in the past.
