    Celebrations and Festivals of the Tamil New Year 2011


    Tamil Calender is used by the Tamil Hindus for all cultural and religious programs. The Tamil New year day starts on 14th April 2011 and the new Tamil Calender is used hereafter. The people in Tamilnadu celebrate a number of festivals based on this Tamil Calender. This resource gives you details of each and every month of the Tamil Calender and the festivals which falls on each Tamil month and also its significance.

    Tamil Calender Month Chithirai: 14 April to 14 May 2011
    This is the first month of the Tamil year. The important festivals of Chithirai month are as follows:
    1. Chitra Pournami
    2. Varusha pirappu or Tamil new year
    3. Chittirai Thiruvizha

    Tamil Calender Month Vaikaasi: 15 May - 15 June 2011
    The important festival of Vaikaasi month is Vaikaasi Visaakam
    Tamil Calender Month Aani: 16 June - 16 July 2011
    The third month Aani is from 15 June - 14 July 2011 and the important day of Aani is Aani Thirumanjanam otherwise called as Aani Uttaram celebrated for Lord Nataraja.

    Tamil Calender Month Aadi: 17 July – 17 August 2011
    Aadi month is considered as the important month of the year. It is also called as the month which is important for tamil women. All the Fridays and Tuesdays are considered as auspicious days and they call them as Aadi Velli and Aadi Chevvai. On these days the unmarried girls go to the temple and do poojas to the Nagadevathai. They worship by offering milk and eggs to snakes. Aadi Amavasya and Aadi Pooram also are important days.

    Tamil Calender Month Aavani: 18 August – 17 September 2011
    The tamil calendar month Aavani is considerd as an important month for Brahmins. The sacred day of Aavani month is Aavani Avittam, a day for changing the poonul or the thread for Brahmins.

    Tamil Calender Month Purattaasi: 18 September - 17 October 2011

    Vaishnavas celebrate the month Purattaasi for the Lord Vishnu. All the Saturdays are important days and they perform pooja to Lord Vishnu by offering him a variety of rice, sweets and pongal. Special poojas are conducted in all Perumal koils. The navarathri festival is also celebrated in this tamil month.

    Tamil Calender Month Aippasi: 18 October - 16 November 2011
    Aippasi month is the month in which the monsoons start in Tamil Nadu. Deepavalli falls on this month. There are persistent rains in this month.

    Tamil Calender Month Karthikai: 17 November - 1 December 2011
    Thirukaarthigai is celebrated in this month by the devotees of Lord Shiva. 108 or 1008 sangabhishekam, a garland made of 108 or 1008 sangu is offered to Lord Shiva and Muruga.

    Tamil Calender Month Maargazhi: 15 December 2011 - 14 January 2012

    Maargazhi is another important month of the year. Young girls wake up early in the morning and do big rangoli on the entrance of their house and go to temples and worship Lord Vishnu for getting blessed with good husbands. They sing Thiruppavai and Thiruvempavai to Lord Vishnu. All the Vishnu temples open early in the morning. Vaikunda Ekadasi falls in this month. Arudra Darisanam is another important day in the month for Lord Shiva.

    Tamil Calender Month Thai: 15 January - 12 February 2012
    The first day of the Thai month is called as "Thai Thirunal" or "Pongal" celebrated with great enjoyment by the tamil people. It is an important day for the farmers because they harvest in this month. Thai Velli and Thaipusam are other important days of this Tamil month. The devotees of Lord Muruga carry Kavedi's on the day of Thaipusam.

    Tamil Calender Month Maasi: 13 February – 13 March 2012
    Maasi Magam falls on this month and special poojas are performed on this auspicious day. MahaShivaratri also comes in this month and is celebrated by all the devotees of Lord Shiva.

    Tamil Calender Month Panguni: 14 March – 12 April 2012
    Panguni Uthiram for Lord Shiva and Lord Muruga is celebrated on this month.
