    Boolokha Vaikuntham - Guruvayoor Temple

    The well-known Shri Krishna temple is at Guruvayoor, near Thrissur in Kerala. Lord Krishna is enshrined here as Shri Guruvayoorappan. This article highlights the divine presence of Lord Krishna in the Guruvayoor Temple, the importance of this temple and the festivals conducted here.


    Location of Boolokha Vaikuntham temple


    Guruvayoor is one of the most sacred and important temples in Kerala. It is called as "Boolokha Vaikuntham", meaning the divine abode of Lord Mahavishnu. It is located at 29 km from Thrissur in Kerala.

    History of the Boolokha Vaikuntham temple


    The parents of Lord Krishna Vasudeva-Devaki worshipped an idol of Maha Vishnu. Later this idol was worshipped by Lord Krishna also. Before entering his Heavenly abode, Vaikuntha,Lord Krishna gave this idol to his friend named Uthava so that he could handover it to Brahaspathi, the guru of devas. This idol was brought to this place by "Guru" with the help of the wind god, "Vaayu". Hence the name "Guruvayoor" to this place. Shri Krishna is called as "Shri Guruvayoorappan" here.

    Festivals at Boolokha Vaikuntham temple


    Ekadasi Festival is celebrated every year during Nov-Dec.
    Annual Festival which is celebrated for 10 days falls on Feb-Mar every year.
    Other festivals are Sri Krishnashtami, Vishu,Thiruvonam, Saraswathi pooja, Mandala pooja etc.

    Importance o fBoolokha Vaikuntham temple


    "Nirmalya Darsanam" and "Sreeveli" are famous in this temple. "Krishnattam", the Kerala dance is conduced in this temple, praising Lord Krishna.Melpatur Narayana Bhattathiri composed his well-known Sanskrit devotional poem "Narayaneeyam",in this temple and got relief from his disease. Poonthanam wrote his "Gnanapanai" on this Lord.This temple is well known for its healing powers.The devotees offerings are of various types from the simple "Archana" to the elaborate 'Udayastamana' pooja.

    "Thulabharam", where the devotees weigh themselves and offer sugar, jaggery, coconut etc., equal to their weight, is also very famous.
    "Annaprasanam", the first feeding ceremony of child is also made here with the prasadam of Lord Krishna.There are exquisite mural paintings and carvings in the walls of the temple. In this temple, there are also the idols of Lord Ganapathy, Lord Ayyappa and Edathedathy Kavil Bhagavathy.
