Dr.muthulashmis service to the human society especially to the women.
Muthtulashmi reddy was born in the pudukkotai state Tamil nadu. Her father was s.narayanawami iyer. He was a principal in the maharaja college. Her mother was chandrammal. She was born in isai vellalar community.
In those days girls not send to school. Cooking and maintaining the house was the education they were given. Around the age of 16 they were got married and look after family. This had been the Tamil tradition for many years. Dr.muthulashmi was the first Tamil women to break all the above said ethics.
Muthulashmi's life in school and college
Her father paved the way for muthulashmi's future endeavors and to be a role model for all women. He broke the tradition and sends her daughter to school. Muthulashmi was brilliant in her studies. Her teachers taught more subjects which was not in her academic. During her puberty she was asked to leave the school. However education was continued in the home. Successfully she completed her high school education.
Now her mother chandrammal, as traditional women, searched bridegroom for her. Muthulashmi hated treating women as a slave in the name of marriage. This attitude reflected in her marriage proposal later. Also she was against the women slave ness, which she wanted to get rid. She expressed her wish to go for higher studies.
She applied to Maharaja College for her higher education. Her application was rejected. The reasons were, she was a girl and her back ground. Her father was a Brahmin but her mother was not a Brahmin. She was another community, which in those treated as low caste. This reason too stood as a hinder for admission. When one door shuts god opens another door. The maharaja of pudukkotai admitted her to college and gave scholarship. She was the first girl to be admitted in men's college. You can imagine how it would be for a girl to sit amidst boys in those days for hours. God knows. Successfully, she completed her college education.
During college day she met Sarogini naidu famously know as nighting gale of India, and attended her meetings. She would have felt that some one has there to share the feelings and to foster it. Her feeling of women slave ness took a form of women's rights. Now her father wanted her to be teacher. But her ambition was different. She joined the madras medical college
Muthu lakshmi reddy, first woman doctor and her marriage in 1914
Completed her degree, in 1912. She became housed surgeon in government hospital for women and children in Chennai. She was the first Tamil and Indian women doctor in India. Here she met her husband Dr.D.T.Sandara reddy. 'Always respect me equal and never cross my wishes' with these conditions had she married him at the age of twenty eight in 1914.
Muthu lakshmi reddy as vice president for the legislative council
She went to England for her higher studies. However she gave the medical practice in the request ofwomen's India association and starts to render social service. She was concern about the orphans especially girls. In 1926 she was nominated as a member in madras legislative as a member of council and became the first women member of legislative in India .later she was elected as deputy chairman of the legislative council. Thus became the first women in the world to be a vice president of legislative council.
Muthulashmis social service as a legislature and founder of cancer institute
The two great personalities anne bezant and mahatma Gandhi who influenced her life. In 1929 she abolished the devadasi system. In 1930 she founded avvai home for destitute women and orphans at besant avenue adyar. She introduced scheme of free education for girls up to class eight. She also played a key role in rising the minimum age of girls in India. She became first chair person for state social welfare board. While she was president for all India woman association, she passed a bill for the suppression of brothels and immoral trafficking of women and children.
She was the founder of adyar cancer institute. In 1952 as foundation stone was laid by Jawaharlal Nehru. In 1954 June 18, the hospital started to function. In 1956 she was awarded padma bhushan. She recorded all her services as a legislator in her book 'my experiences as legislator.' Even at the age of 80 she was energetic.
In 1968 July 22, her service to the society, came to an end. Still her memories live in the form of woman liberation.
