One of the important Tamil festivals for Hindus is Sri Rama navami. Sri Rama navami falls on April 12, 2011. It is considered as one of the five major holy festivals in Hindu religion. Wish to know the celebrations on this auspicious day. Then this article is for you. Here I tried to give as much as information about this holy festival. Hope it will be useful.

Story behind rama navami and its celebrations in tamil nadu
In treat yuga there lived a king named dhasarata. Who had three wives, kausalya, sumithra and kaikeyi.. They had no children. Rishi vasista the kula guru suggested king to perform puthira kameshti yagna. To perform this yagna he asked king to bring rishi rishyasringar. King did the same.
As the result of the yagna yagneswara appeared and gave a bowl of
payasam
or divine pudding to the king and to give to his wives. King gave half of the payasm to kausalya first wife and another half to kaikeyi younger wife. They both gave half of their payasam to sumithra.
After a few days they conceived. According to
Vedic calendar
, on the ninth day of no moon or amvasay, of chaitra month Kausalya give birth to rama at noon, kaikeyi to bharatha and sumithra to lakshmana and shatrughna. This holy day is celebrated as
rama navami in Hindu religion
. Lord rama is also considered as seventh incarnation of Vishnu.
Sri rama navami celebration by Tamil devotees
People wash and clean their houses and decorate with mango leaves. Take bath, sun god worship is done in the morning. Perform fast; perform poojas with chanting

, visit ram temple to get blessings. It is also celebrated as the concluding day of

Fasting
is performed according to ones ability. Some perform without even drinking water, some do water-only fast, some juice fast, some with fruits and some with one meal fast.

Sri rama navai celebration in temples
Sri Rama navi
is celebrated by Hindus across the world. Temples are decorated according to Vedas description. Idol of rama, sita, lakshmana, asn hanuma are decorated beautifully. Perform poojas;

is the important event of the day.
In
khodanda Rama temple, rameshwaram, Tamilnadu
, sri rama navmi is celebrated enthusiastically by devotees. The marriage of sita Rama also happened on the birth day, so
sita Rama kalyanam
or marriage is also performed in the Sri Ram temples.
Telling Rama janma story and veethi ulaa or procession in the evening. Panakam is given as Prasadam to devotees, in temples on that day, which is prepared by mixing jaggery, pepper and ginger with water.
Sri Rama is regarded as an idol for how a house holder to be. During Sri Rama navami lets us worship lord Rama and pray to fulfill our genuine wishes.
