Importance of Maha Shivratri

Mahashivratri 2011 is celebrations is today on the 2nd March 2011. Mahashivratri is a special night of Lord Shiva, which will be the 6th Moonless night of February or March month every year. On the Mahashivratri Day Lord Siva was married to Parvati Ma. So Shiva devotees are celebrating Maha Shivratri as the wedding day of Lord Shiva and Ma Parvati. During Mahashivratri Shiva Tandava (Dance of Lord Shiva) is performed.

Rituals and Fasting on Maha Shivratri Night

All Shiva devotees will be in Shivaratri fasting throgh out the day and Night of Maha Shivaratri. They won't eat grains food like rice, wheat etc. They will have only milk and fruits on Maha Shivratri day and night. They are following the sincere ritual worship of Lord Shiva on this day. Special Shiva Puja performed in Lord Shiva temples on Maha Shivaratri day in which wives pray for their husbands and unmarried girls pray for a good husband.

Maha Sivaratri Puja and Rituals

In Maha Shivaratri day devotees get up in the early morning, will take bath. Then light a lamp in fron of the Shiva idol and offer Bilva leaves (special for Lord Shiva). Then the go to nearest Lord Shiva temple and take part in all relegious ritual poojas. Devottes will apply Bhasma from the temple after the Pooja.During the Day priests do the special pooja of Shiva Lingam (Abhishekam)with Water, Milk, Honey, Ghee and Fruits. While perform Pooja of Shiva Lingam chanting Lord Shiva Mantra and Slogams. All Shiva devotees is observed for Shiva and chanting the panchakshara Mantra 'Ohm Namah Shivaay for whole night untill 04:00 hrs in the morning. They are used to believe strongly that Lord Shiva will be appeared during this period.
