Subject Title: Advanced Thermodynamics

UNIT I
Availability, Irreversibility and Second-Law Efficiency for a closed System and steadystate
Control Volume. Availability Analysis of Simple Cycles. Thermodynamic
Potentials, Maxwell relations, Generalised relation for changes in Entropy, Internal
Energy and Enthalpy, Generalised Relations for Cp and Cv Clausius Claypeyron
Equation, Joule-Thomson Coefficient, Bridgman Tables for thermodynamic relations.

UNIT II
Different Equations of State, Fugacity, Compressibility, Principle of Corresponding
States, Use of generalized charts for enthalpy and entropy departure, fugacity coefficient,
Lee-Kesler generalized three parameter tables. Fundamental property relations for
systems of variable composition, partial molar prosperities, Real gas mixtures, Ideal
solution of real gases and liquids, Equilibrium in multi phase systems, Gibbs phase rule
for non-reactive components.

UNIT III
Thermo chemistry, first Law analysis of reacting systems, Adiabatic Flame temperature,
Entropy change of reacting systems, Second Law analysis of reacting systems, Criterion
for reaction equilibrium composition.

UNIT IV
Microstates and Macrostates, Thermodynamic probability, Degeneracy of energy levels,
Maxwell-Boltzman, Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein Statistics, Microscopic Interpretation
of heat and work, Evaluation of entropy, Partition function, Calculation of the
Microscopic properties from partition functions. Collision Theory and Transport
properties.

UNIT V
Conjugate Fluxes and Forces, Entropy Production, Onsager's Reciprocity relations,
thermo-electric phenomena and formulations. Thermodynamics of High-Gas flow.
