The History and Profile of Madras Atomic Power Station

The Madras Atomic Power Station is located at Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu about 80 Kilometers from the south part of Chennai in India. The Madras Atomic Power Station plant was constructed while Srimathi Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister of India in the year 1983 and completed 28 years today. The Madras Atomic Power Station(MAPS) was harmonized to the framework in the presence of the former Prime Minister of India, Srimathi Indira Gandhi on July 23, 1983. The main objective of the Madras Atomic Power Station is to make stronger the nuclear capability of India and it also laid the base for the indigenization of India's nuclear power programme. The Madras Atomic Power Station is the first fully indigenously constructed nuclear power station in India.

The capacity and Power units in the Madras Atomic Power Station

The Madras Atomic Power Station is a comprehensive nuclear power production plant which performs various operations like fuel reprocessing, waste treatment facility that includes plutonium fuel production for Fast Breeder Reactors (FBRs). There are two units of power station available in the Madras Atomic Power Station. They are also known as MAPS-I and MAPS-II .The two units of Madras Atomic power station have the production capacity of 220 MW each.

The critical situation of the Madras Atomic Power Station

The first and second units of the station went critical in the year 1983 and 1985 respectively. The MAPS-1 had reached the critical situation on July 2, 1983 and it was synchronized to the grid on July 23, 1983.The MAPS-1 had went critical in 1983 and began it operations at full power in January 1984.The MAPS-2 had obtained critical in the year 1985 and began its full power of operations in March 1986.

The Reactors facility in the Madras Atomic Power Station

The Madras Atomic Power Station has reactors facility in a reactor building house with double shell containment that ensuring the total protection for the power station even in the furthest possibility of loss of coolant accident. An Interim Storage Facility [ISF] is also located in Kalpakkam for the purpose of Madras Atomic Power Station. The reactors facility houses had two indigenously which was called MAPS-1 and MAPS-2. The MAPS-1 was completed in the year 1981, but start-up was delayed due to a shortage of heavy water. After procuring the necessary heavy water, the two Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors(PHWR) are capable of generating 170 MW each. It is lower than the designed power of 235 MW each since some zirconium pieces from the splintered cooling system was created in a moderator pump.

The statement of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd about Madras Atomic Power Production

The NPCIL (Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd.) said that in the recent past years, MAPS-1 and MAPS-2 have undergone major transformation and modernization. It also made safety up gradation with Number of coolant channels replacements. The statement added that all NPCIL stations, including MAPS, have achieved "Excellency" in terms of safety, over 280 reactor-years of safe and accident-free operations. All NPCIL operations stations have secured ISO-14001 certification (Environment Management System). At present, The NPCIL has 17 nuclear power units in India with a total installed capacity of 4120 MW in operations and six additional units with a total capacity of 3160 MW under construction.

The profit and Power Production of Madras Atomic Power Production

MAPS has supplied more than 45,000 million units (MUs) of electricity at a current tariff rate of Rupees 1.89 per unit and also earned a profit of Rupees 11.2 billion so far. Tamil Nadu has a share of 330 MW out of the station capacity of 440 MW in addition to the share of other beneficiary states in the southern electricity region. The Madras Atomic Power Production had celebrated its silver jubilee year recently. It also started its Third Atomic Power Station in Kalpakkam with large capacity of power production recently.
