Makkal Osai - Tamil daily newspaper in Malaysia

In 1981, breaking the monopoly of Tamil Nesan, the lone Tamil newspaper of Malaysia since 1924, Makkal Osai was started which means Tamil voice.

Initially Makkal Osai was published by the name Tamil Osai and this newspaper was supposed to be against Malaysia Indian Congress (MIC) and criticized several steps taken by MIC.

Controversies and truth against Malaysian Tamil News Paper Makkal Osai

In 2007 Newspaper Makkal Osai came into controversy after publishing a caricature of Jesus having cigarette in one hand and a can of beer in other hand. The controversial cartoon of Jesus in paper Makkal Osai was published at main page under quote "Thoughts of the day" on 21st August 2007.

The Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism and Sikhism (MCCBCHS), which represents 90 percent of the Malaysian Christian community demanded for investigation and finally on 24th August 2007 the publication of paper Makkal Osai was seized. The publication of Makkal Osai was resumed on September 24, 2007.

Again in April 2008 Government was adamant in resuming license of Makkal Osai but later after several round of discussion finally agreed to renew license an appeal by Makkal Osai.
