    Kumbakonam - The City of Temples



    Kumbakonam is popularly known as 'Town of Temples'. Kumbakonam is famous for Navagraha Temples(Nine Planets) and all of the nine temples are located within the radius of 65 Km around Kumbakonam. Kumbakonam is famous for Mahamagam festival. This festival is celebrated once in every 12 years during the Tamil Month of Masi (February-March). Here is the most popular tourist temples situated in and around Kumbakonam.

    Sarangapani Temple - Lord Vishnu

    Kumbakonam - Sarangapani temple
    Significance: Temple for Lord Vishnu a popular Vaishnavite Temple which is the largest of the Vishnu temples in Kumbakonam built during thirteenth-century. This is the third Sthala among 108 divya-desas (108 Tirupatis).
    Distance: Situated at Kumbakonam Town
    Presiding Deity: Sarangapani

    Thiruneelakkudi Shiva Temple


    Significance: One of the 275 Thevara Padal Petra Sthalam. Is is said that the oil abishekam to the main deity linga is absorbed.
    Distance: On the Kumbakonam-karaikkal Road near Thirunageswaram
    Presiding Deity: Neelakandeswarar
    Theertham: Bhrama theertham.

    Ramasamy temple - Lord Rama


    Significance: Vaishnavite Temple. Built by Achutha Nayaka during 16th Century. Famous for its Santum Sanctorum(Dwaja Sthambam) with stone images of Rama in Pattabhishekam (Coronation) pose.
    Distance: Located at Cauvery Delta Region in Kumbakonam.
    Presiding Deity: Lord Rama

    Aathi Kumbeswarar Temple

    Significance: Important Saivite Temple. Important Hindu festival of Mahamaham is associated with this temple.
    Distance: Located on the Central Part of Kumbakonam Town
    Presiding Deity: Aathi Kumbeswarar

    Sri Kalyanasundareswarar Temple - Nallur


    Significance: One of the 275 Thevara Padal Petra Sthalam. Arunagirinathar sang Thirupugazh at this place only. Here the deity is also known in the name of Panchavarneswarar(five colours) as the colour of the deity changes its color five times during daytime as Molten gold, copper, light red, emerald and multicolour for every 2 hours and 20 minutes.
    Distance: 5 kms in the Kumbakonam to Papanasam route towards east of Papanasam.
    Presiding Deity: Kalyanasundarar, Panchavarneshwarar, Periyandeswarar.

    Sri Garba Rakshambigai Temple - Thirukkarugavur


    Significance: One of the 275 Thevara Padal Petra Sthalam and the temple is more popular as the Deity here grants child boon and safe delivery by protecting the fetus and hence the name Karu Kavoor.(Karu meaning fetus)
    Distance: 7 Kms from Papanasam, which is on the Kumbakonam- Thanjavur Road and 21 kms from Kumbakonam
    Presiding Deity: Mullai Vana nadhar with Garba Rakshambikai
    Theertham: Thirupparkulam
    Sthala Vruksham: Mullai.

    Thirunageswaram Raahu Navagraha Temple

    Kumbakonam - Nageswaran temple
    Significance: One of the Navagraha sthalam.
    Distance: 6kms east of Kumbakonam to Thiruneelakkudi
    Presiding Deity: Naganathar
    Sthala Vruksham: Shenbagam
    Theertham: Surya theertham.

    Ganapathi Agragharam - Lord Ganapathy


    Significance: Small village in the district of Thanjavur. The temple on Maha Ganapathi was installed here by Sage Agastya. Everyone here will celebrate Vinayaka Chathurthi festival at this temple only and nobody perfoms puja at home
    Distance: 25 Kms from Kumbakonam on the road to Thiruvaiyyaru
    Presiding Deity: Lord Vinayaka

    Sri Vilva Vaneshwarar Temple - Thiruvaigavur


    Significance: One of the 275 Thevara Padal Petra Sthalam. Ususally nandhis in shiva temples are faced towards deity but here it is facing outside so as to encounter the lion.
    Distance: 4.5 Kms from Thirupurambiyam and situated to the north of river cauvery. 15 Kms from Kumbakonam and 12 kms from Papanasam
    Presiding Deity: Vilva vaneswarar (Lord Shiva)
    Theertham: Yama theetham
    Sthala Vruksham: Vilvam

    Sri Palaivana Nadha Swamy Temple - Thirupaalathurai

    Kumbakonam - kumbeshwarar deity
    Significance: One of the 275 Thevara Padal Petra Sthalam
    Distance: 12 kms from Kumbakonam on Kumbakonam - Tanjore Main Road
    Presiding Deity: Palaivana nadhar.
    Theertham: Indra, Cauvery
    Sthala Vruksham: Paalai and Palm (Panai) tree.

    Someswarar Temple


    Significance: Built during Chola period of 13th Century. Famous for Dravidian style of Temple architecture.
    Distance: Located in the southern part of Sri Sarangapani temple In Kumbakonam Town
    Presiding Deity: Someswarar

    Thiru Sakthi Mutram Shiva Temple


    Significance: One of the 275 Thevara Padal Petra Sthalam
    Distance: 6 Kms from Kumbakonam which is nearby to Pateeswaram
    Deity: Sivakozhundheeswarar with Periyananaki amman
    Theertham: Soola Theertham

    Sakshinadhar Shiva Temple - Thirupurambiyam

    Kumbakonam - Sarangapani deity
    Significance: One of the 275 Thevar Padal Petra Sthalam and one of the important temple for Lord Dakshinamoorthy.
    Distance: 10 kms from Kumbakonam
    Presiding Deity: Satchinathar
    Theertham: Brahma theertham.

    Thiruvalanchuzhi Vellai Vinayagar Temple


    Significance: One of the 275 Thevara Padal Petra Sthalams. Here the vinayagar is said to be made of sea foam and is white in colour and hence the name Vellai Vinayagar
    Distance: 6 Kms from Kumbakonam on Kumbakonam - Swamimalai Road via Dharasuram
    Deity: Vellai Vinayagar or Valanchuzhi Vinayagar
    Theertham: Jada theertham, Arasalaru

    Patteeswaram


    Significance: The name of the place signifies that the daughter (named Patti) of the Divine cow Kamadenu worshipped the Lord here and hence this name. The temple here is one of the 275 Thevara Padal Petra Sthalam.
    Distance: 10 Kms from Kumbakonam on the road to Thanjavur Via Melattur
    Deity: Dhenupureeawarar also called Pattiswarar with Goddess Gnanambikai.

    Maha Linga Swamy Temple - Thiruvidai marudhur

    Kumbakonam - Chakrapani Deity
    Significance: This temple has big swayambhu lingam and hence the name Mahalingam.
    Distance: 6 Kms from Kumbakonam on Kumbakonam -Mayiladuthurai Road
    Presiding Deity: Mahalingeswarar

    Uppiliappan Koil Visnu Temple


    Significance: One of 108 Divya Desams. Saltless food is offered at the temple and hence the name Uppiliappan.

    Subramanya Swamy Temple - Swamimalai


    Significance: Temple for Lord Karthikeya. It is the fourth, among Arupadai Veedu(Six abodes of Lord Muruga)

    Chakrapani temple - Lord Vishnu

    Kumbakonam - Chakrapani temple
    Significance: This is the biggest vaishnavite temple next to Sarangapani temple. Chakra means wheel which is wielded by Lord Vishnu and hence the name Chakrapani.
    Distance: Located near river Cauvery in Kumbakonam Town .

    Darasuram - Airavatesvara Temple


    Built by Raja Raja Chola -II - Famous for Art and Architecture.
    Distance: 3 Kms from Kumbakonam on the Thanjavur Road

    Avoor Pasupatheeswarar Temple


    Significance: One of the 275 Thevara Padal Petra Sthalams. The Divine cow Kamadenu worshipped Lord Shiva here and hence the name Pasupatheeswar (Pasu means cow)

    Significance: This temple is built by Kulothunga III
    Distance: 5 Kms from Kumbakonam on Kumbakonam - Mayiladuthurai Road
    Presiding Deity: kambakareswarar
    Theertham: Saraba theertham
    Sthala Vruksham: Vilvam

    Oothukadu Sri Kalinga Nardhana Krishnan Temple


    Significance: It is one of Navagraha Sthalam for Rahu Dosham
    Distance: 20 Kms from Kumbakonam on the Thanjavur Road via Melatur
    Deity: Vedanarayanar with Sridevi and Bhudevi but is more known in the name of Kalinga Narthana Krishnar.

    Navagraha Guru Temple - Alangudi


    Significance: Temple for Lord Shiva. Alam means Poison and gudi means drink. As the Lord here came to rescue of devas by consuming the poison he is known as Aabathsagayeshwarar and the temple named Alangudi.
    Distance: 17 Kms south of Kumbakonam - Mannargudi route.
    Presiding Deity: Aabatsakaayar
    Theertham: Brahma Theertham
