Interlocking feature of Tamilnadu Temple Gopurams

In Tamilnadu most of the temples are built by the great kings and the temples are built in such a way that it withstands all natural disasters. The temples are built in a great way by the kings to withstand even the earth quake. The credit goes to the creativity of Tamilnadu kings who implemented these methodologies. People may wonder how the temple gopuram stands in a great manner even though there are lots of natural changes occurring in the surrounding. Even thought there is an earth quake we can very well tell that the temple Gopuram can very well withstand the Earthquake.

The reason for the strength of Tamilnadu Temple Gopuram and the other building in the temple is because of the concept of the interlocking feature of the Tamilnadu temples built by different great kings. The interlocking feature is nothing but during the construction of the temple one part of the rock will be interlocked with the other part of the rock and then it will be applied with the sticking substance like cement. The rocks are mostly granite or any strong stone interlocked inside the other rock. This will increase the stiffness of the rocks and the construction. This is the major secret behind the interlocking feature of the Tamilnadu temple Gopuram.

This interlocking of the rocks inside each other was implemented first by the chola kings. In most of the chola temples we can very well see that the rocks will be interlocked inside each other so that the strength of the Gopuram of Tamilnadu temples will be very good when compared to the normal construction. In most of the chola temple the interlocking feature of the rocks are very common and this makes the temple look very healthy in all the aspects.

Some of the temples were constructed by certain kings in a very poor manner such that recently some issues were also faced based on the fact that the Gopuram of the temple needs to be rebuilt and moreover the Gopuram even fell down because of the Major damage that occurred there in the Gopuram because of the natural disasters. Here comes the importance of the interlocking feature of the Gopurams. The Gopurams and the other shrines in Tamilnadu temple are constructed in such a way that the interlocking of the rocks is done to make the rocks hold each other very strong.

The paste that is used to stick two or more rocks together will be prepared in such a way that two stones are combined very easily. The interlocking is also used to increase the strength of two or more rocks that are joined. Mostly the chola Kings implemented the interlocking feature to the temples that they constructed.
