    Musical Career of Muthiah Bhagavatar


    The musical career of Muthiah Bhagavatar was like a dream journey hereafter. Muthiah Bhagavatar was not only a vocalist but also an adept player of both Chitraveena and Mridan Muthiah Bhagavatar composed a theoretical treatise, Sangita Kalpa Drumam, and was a regular lecturer at the Music Academy of Madras. Muthiah Bhagavatar was the first Indian to receive doctorate in music and this title (D. Litt.) was awarded to him by the Kerala University in 1943. Muthiah Bhagavatar was also a lover of classical literature. The book by Muthiah Bhagavatar is known as Tyagaraja Vijaya Kavya which is a Sanskrit poetic work.

Muthiah Bhagavatar Carnatic MusicianMuthiah Bhagavatar succeeded to impress the Maharaja of Mysore by his music and was thereby appointed as the Court Musician of Mysore. While the Court Musician Muthiah Bhagavatar composed more or less 115 kritis in Kannada to sing the glory of Chamundi devi, the presiding deity of the Mysore rulers. Later Maharaja Mulam Tirunal invited him to the Court of Travancore. Here he researched on the Swatitirunal kritis. His book Sangeeta Kalpadruma was also written here and won him the aforesaid doctorate. Muthiah Bhagavathar also served as the first President of the Annual Conference at the Madras Music Academy. He was also crowned with the most cherished and prestigious award in the world of Carnatic music, Sangeetha Kalanidhi, in 1930.

    Disciples of Muthiah Bhagavatar


    Muthiah Bhagavatar left a great legacy behind him. When Muthiah Bhagavatar passed away in 1945, he had over 400 kritis under his credit. He also brought a paradigm shift in the world of Carnatic music by his introduction of several Hindustani ragas such as Sohani and Saarang Malhar. And his own creations, roughly 20 in number, including the renowned Mohana Kalyani, also made him immortal. Madurai Mani Iyer was one of his best known disciples. His granddaughter, Smt. Rugmini Gopalakrishnan, was also a noted veena player.
