    Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavatar


    Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavatar was one of the greatest Carnatic music gurus of Tamilnadu. The popular name of Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavatar was Muthiah Bhagavatar. The date of birth of Muthiah Bhagavatar was November 15, 1877 and the date of death of Muthiah Bhagavatar was June 30, 1945.

    Biography of Muthiah Bhagavatar


    The biography of Muthiah Bhagavatar is very attractive. Birth place of Muthiah Bhagavatar was Harikesanallur, a small village in the Tirunelveli district of Tamilnadu, India. Muthiah Bhagavatar was born in a wealthy family. Muthiah Bhagavatar was trained in music from a very young age. The father of Muthiah Bhagavatar was used to patronize musicians. Muthiah Bhagavatar's father demised when he was just six years old, and his maternal uncle M. Lakshmana Suri began to foster him. M. Lakshmana Suri initiated little Muthiah Bhagavatar into the Sanskrit as well as Vedic studies.

    Muthiah BhagavatarAs Muthiah Bhagavatar grew up, his attraction to music goaded him unto leaving the hometown of Muthiah Bhagavatar Harikesanallur. He was only ten years at that point of time. Fortunately, Muthiah Bhagavatar founded a wonderful teacher. The teacher of Muthiah Bhagavatar or the music guru of Muthiah Bhagavatar was Padinaindumandapa Sambasiva Iyer. Padinaindumandapa Sambasiva Iyer used to reside at Tiruvarur. Sambasiva Iyer was the father of T.S Sabesa Iyer, who was also a noted musician and had received the prestigious Sangeetha Kalanidhi Award from the Madras Music Academy. Muthiah Bhagavatar spent nine years with his master's son Sambasiva Iyer. The rich voice of Muthiah Bhagavatar as well as his quality tanam singing secured him a much coveted place in the canon of Carnatic music.

    Muthiah Bhagavatar as a Composer


    Muthiah Bhagavatar as a Composer was very successful. Musical compositions by Muthiah Bhagavatar are almost 400 in number, the greatest among the post-Trinity composers. Muthiah Bhagavatar composed his notes in four languages –Tamil, Telugu, Sanskrit and Kannada. Muthiah Bhagavatar created more or less 20 unique ragams or chord progressions formations. The ragams created by Muthiah Bhagavatar include Vijaysaraswathi, Karnaranjani, Budhamanohari, Niroshta and Hamsanandhi, which are still very much popular among Tamilnadu carnatic musicians.

    Muthiah Bhagavatar also revived two almost lost ragams namely Shanmukhapriya and Mohanakalyani. Muthiah Bhagavatar's music was equally appealing to the Westerners and he had composed a number of English notes. In 1934, Muthiah Bhagavatar introduced himself to the film industry by composing the music for Lavakusa, a Ramayana based film by Tamilnadu Talkies. Muthiah moved to Bombay and composed 63 songs for this film altogether.
