Hogenakkal Waterfalls - Niagara of India in Tamilnadu
Hogenakkal, the Niagara of India is located in the Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu about 180 km from Bangalore and 46 km from Dharmapuri . Hogenakkal has been a popular picnic as well as shooting spot for many Tamil and other language films. The gushing white waterfall and its scenic beauty have jinxed people from all over world and is gaining importance as a popular tourist spot.
Meaning of Hogenakkal : Hogenakkal derived its name from the water cascades that fall from a great height, due to which they create smoke. Hoge is smoke in Kannada and kal is stone. So it basically means Smoking rocks.
 Hogenakkal is a quiet village at the confluence of the Kaveri and the Chinnar rivers. From here only the Kaveri river develops into many waterfalls. The water of Hogenakkal is said to have curative properties and thus used for Medical baths. Hogenakkal has its fame for beautiful sceneries and boat rides. Besides all these it also provides drinking water. The main attractions at Hogenakkal are the massive waterfalls, with the water falling about 60 - 1000 ft deep in the canyon. Hogenakkal’s other main attraction are boat rides, or rides on Parisals. It is a spectacular experience. Theerthamalai, a popular pilgrim centre which is about 16 km from Dharmapuri is also one of the tourist spots for people who visit hogenakkal . Besides Pennagaram village is also another spot to visit.
Another exciting attraction at Hogenakkal Waterfalls is the diving show of local kids. These kids dive for a fee. They can dive from a height of around 30 feet and climb straight up back on the rocks in no time. And the fee can range from 5 to 10 rupees. One can also take long treks in the surrounding Melagiri Hills if the stay is for more than one day and enjoy the rugged landscape.

Best part of the year to visit Hogenakkal is after monsoons. The temperature ranges between a maximum of 34 degree in summer and 13 degree in winter. Hogenakkal is very lively in the months between July and August .But the best times to visit Hogenakkal will be from October to March when large amount of water will be present.

Bangalore Railway Station is also nearby Hogenakkal about 150kms. From Bangalore one can avail bus to reach Hogenakkal.
Bus services to waterfalls Tamilnadu : Hogenakkal is well connected to TamilNadu and Karnataka through numerous bus services. Deluxe buses are available from Bangalore to Hogenakkal (133 km) and Salem to Hogenakkal (114 km). Bus charge is about Rs 3 per kilometer per head.
