Yuvan Shankar Raja did his school in St.Bede's School, Chennai and completed his degree in Loyola College, Chennai. He mentor is Jacob Master. He started learning his music talent from Jacob Master.

After that Yuvan Shankar Raja done music for Unakka Ellam Unakka and Rishi in the years of 1999 and 200. Both of this film did average in box office.
In the year of 2000, Yuvan Shankar Raja got a chance to work with A.R.Murugathas's debut film Dheena which had lead as Ajith and Laila. Album of this film and the Movie became huge hit among the audiences.

Thulluvatho Ilamai and Bala's Nandha were released in the year 2001. The Songs of Thulluvatho Ilamai became great success among youth. The collaboration with Selvaraghavan was very success. Later both of them gave very good musical songs to Tamil film world.
• 2002 : Junior Senior, Kadhal Samrajyam, Bala, Mounam Pesiyathe, April Madhathil, Punnagai Poove and Pop corn. Songs of April Madhathil became blockbuster among youth audience. Other film like Bala, Mounam Pesiyathe and Punnagai Poove received well. He also did on screen performance in Punnagai Poove.
 • 2003 : Kadhal Konden was released with the combination of Yuvan Shankar Raja, Selvaraghavan and Dhanush. Background score of this film was anonymously praised. Movie and Songs became blockbusters. In the same year he did another film named as Kurumbu. This film is director Vishnuvardhan's debut film. Winner, Pudhiya Geethai, Thennavan Pudhukottaiyulirunthu Saravan are the other films did by Yuvan in the year of 2003.
• 2004 : Ullam Ketkumae, Aethiree, Perazhagan, 7G Rainbo colony, Manmdhan, Bose and Adhu in the year of 2004. 7G Rainbo Colony with Selvaraghavan and Manmadhan with Simbhu got good reviews and did very well in box office.
• 2005 : Arinthum Ariyamalum, Dass, Thotti Jaya(1 song alone), Oru Kalluriyin Kathai, Kanda Naal Mudhal, Sandakozhi, Kalvanin Kadhali, Agaram and Pudupettai are other films released in the year of 2009 with Yuvan's Musical core.
