Salem is well-known for cotton and silk handloom weaving.The name Salem perhaps originated from the word Sela or Shalya, which refers to the country around the hills, as found in the inscriptions. According to local tradition, Salem is the birth place of Tamil poetess Avvaiyar.

Kottai Mariamman Temple
There are several Mariamman temples in Salem, of which the Kottai Marriamman temple is the most renowned. Mariamman is a Hindu goddess, an incarnation of Shakti.
This small, tranquil hill town situated in the Shevaroy Hills has a charming landscape that comprises of coffee plantations and densely forested slopes. yercaud also has many small temples and among that murugar temple is the famous.
This is 9 km from Yercaud. which can be seen from the plains to the east of the hill. You will get a hazy sight of a deer with two horns, visible in a cave between rocks on the hill. As you move closer, the strange vision gradually vanishes.
Famous for the Kailasanatha Temple, this place is situated 27 km from Salem. Decked with exquisite statues and stone carvings, a special attraction of the place is the rotating lotus flower in the ceiling.
Mettur Dam Salem
Located 52 km from Salem, this dam across River Cauvery is one of the biggest reservoirs with water spread of 15,540 hectares.
Shevapet Mariamman temple Salem temples

The Sugavaneshwarar temple is also a very important shrine of Salem. Mythology records that sage Sugha Brahmarishi worshiped the lord here. Arunagirinadhar has sung a song on Lord Muruga in Sugavaneshwarar temple. It was constructed during 13th Century by mamannan Sundara Pondiyan.
Kottai Perumal Koil, Salem temples
Alagirnathar Thirukoil popularly known as "Kottai Perumal Koil", located at the heart of the city. This
has been built centuries ago and has some beautiful sculptures. "Vaikunta Ekadasi" is the most famous festival in the temple, and on that day, lakhs of devotees visit the temple.In this temple, other festivals such as Brahmotsavam, Pavithrotsavam, Navarathri, and Puratasi are celebrated at good spirit. Thousands of devotees throng the temple during these days. "Aandaal Thirukalyanam" is a famous utsavam in the temple for which a special garland is brought from Sri Villi Puttur ("Soodi kodutha sudar malai")

It was amazing to see the grand decor on the road and within the temple of ellaipedari amman temple in maravaneri. Also had good darshan. Love to visit next year.
