At the age of 14, Ilaiyaraaja had joined his elder step brother's music troupe. He was working with that troupe for almost 10 years. In 1970s Ilaiyaraaja worked as session guitarist and keyboardist in the Orchestra conducted by famous music composers. After that Ilaiyaraaja had joined as assistant for G.K.Venkatesh who was the Kannada film Music Director.
Film Carrier of Ilaiyaraaja
 In the year of 1976, Ilaiyaraaja made his debut in Tamil Film Industry. Ilaiyaraaja started his carrier with a movie Annakkili which was produced by Panchu Arunachalam. The songs of Annakkili were so popular among the audiences and Ilaiyaraaja became limelight after this movie.
He has scored music for Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi film industry. Ilaiyaraaja's major contribution is in Tamil and Telugu. Ilaiyaraaja scored music for more than 600 Tamil films and around 250 Telugu films.
Normally Ilaiyaraaja comes up with tune and later lyrics are added to that tune. This kind of composing technique was introduced by Ilaiyaraaja for the first time.
Best of Ilaiyaraaja
In 1991, Ilaiyaraaja had scored music for Thalapathi. The Song Rakkama kaiya Thattu from Thalapathi was listed as one of the BBC World's Top Ten songs.
In 1987, Ilaiyaraaja had composed music for the film Nayakan. Nayakan was ranked as one of the all time 100 Movies by Time magazine.

Padma Bhushan : Ilaiyaraaja has honored with Padma Bhushan award in the year of 2010. Padma Bhushan is the third highest civilian award in India.
National Awards won by Ilaiyaraaja: Ilaiyaraaja has won National Film Award for Best Music Director 3 times.

In the year of 1988, Ilaiyaraaja honored with Tamil Nadu Government's Kalaimaamani Award by Karunanidhi, the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
Ilaiyaraaja received Honorary Doctorate from Annamalai University in the year of 1994.
Ilaiyaraaja was awarded Honorary Doctorate from The World University Round Table, Arizona, USA in the year of 1994.
Ilaiyaraaja received Honorary Doctorate from Madurai Kamaraj University in the year of 1996.
Ilaiyaraaja is first Asian Composer to score a Symphony. Ilaiyaraaja had done a music course in Trinity College of Music, London and got Gold medal.
