    Kumarasami Kamaraj, more familiar as K. Kamaraj was a great politician from Tamilnadu. K. Kamaraj was very much influential in Indian politics around the 1960s. K. Kamaraj was hence known as the "Kingmaker". K. Kamaraj served his native land Tamilnadu as the Chief Minister from 1954 to 1963. K. Kamaraj was also an MP (Member of the Parliament) for long. K. Kamaraj was known for his down to earth simpliticy.

    Date of Death of K. Kamraj: 2 October, 1975
    Father of K. Kamaraj: Kumarasamy Nadar
    Mother of K. Kamaraj: Sivakami Ammal
    Primary School of K. Kamaraj: Enadhy Nayanar Vidyalaya
    High School of K. Kamraj: Kshatriya Vidyalaya

    K. Kamraj was also very much associated with the Independence Movement of India. K. Kamraj enjoyed a high post in the Indian National Congress, and played a key role behind the enthronement of the two prime ministers, Lal Bahadur Shastri (1964) and Indira Gandhi (1966). The concept of Mid Day Meal was also first implemented by K. Kamraj in Tamilnadu while he was the chief minister. K. Kamraj was awarded Bharat Ratna in 1976, two years after his death, and thus was awarded with the highest civilian honour of India. To commemorate him, the Chennai Airport has been renamed as Kamaraj Terminal.

    K. Kamraj came from a merchant family. Kumarasamy Nadar, the father of K. Kamaraj, was a coconut trader. Kamaraj's father died when he was only a little boy of six years. At the age of eleven, Kamaraj had to discontinue his schooling to support his family. K. Kamaraj then joined a cloth shop, run by his uncle, to cater to the needs of his family.The rise from that much poverty to the high position of a Chief Minister has been almost a miracle for K. Kamaraj.


    K. Kamaraj in the Freedom Movement



    K. Kamaraj would often bunk his works in the cloth shop to join political meetings and processions. K. Kamaraj was a great fan of the famous leader and great orator Dr. Varadarajulu Naidu. In 1919, K. Kamaraj joined the Indian national Congress as a full-timer of the Congress Party. K. Kamaraj also took part in the march to Vedaranyam. It was led by Chakravarty Rajagopalachari as a part of the larger movement of the Salt Satyagraha in 1930.

    For such political activities, K. Kamaraj was arrested and kept in the Alipore Jail of Calcutta. He was then 27 years of age. But, after the Gandhi-Irwin Pact in 1931, he was released. K. Kamaraj was again put behind the bars in 1940 and was this time sent to Vellore. In 1942, he was again arrested, this time for participating in the Quit India movement.
