Rajiv Gandhi gave him a chance to serve as a Minister of State in the Ministry of Commerce. After that in the year of 1986, he got a chance to serve as a Minister of State in the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions. In the same year he got an additional responsibility as a Minister of State for Internal Security in Ministry of Home Affairs.
Chidambaram as a Minister of State (Independent)
In 1991, P.Chidambaram was appointed as a Minister of State (Independent) in the Ministry o f Commerce. In 1992, He had resigned his minister post due to some controversies. In 1995, P.Chidambaram was again appointed as the Minister of State (Independent) in the same Ministry of Commerce. He made some changes in Import and Export policies of India during his tenure.
Chidambaram as a Finance Minister
P.Chidambaram had quit from Indian National Congress and formed Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) with Moopanar. He went to Lok sabha as a TMC's MP in the year of 1996. He was appointed as a Union Minister of Finance by then Prime Minister H.D.Deva Gowda. He was in office until 1998.
In 2001, Chidambaram came away from TMC and form his own party named as Congress Jananayaka Peravai. He mergerd his party with Indian National Congress in the year of 2004.
Chidambaram was appointed as Minister of Finance in the year of 2004 by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Chidambaram served as Finance Minister until 2008.

In 2008, Chidambaram was appointed as Minister of Home Affairs by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. In 2009, He again won from Sivaganga constituency and assumed as Home Minister again.
