Anuradha Ramanan: A Great Tamil Writer
Anuradha Ramanan (29th June, 1947 - 16th May 2010) was one of the greatest literary giants Tamilnadu has ever produced. Her grandfather R. Balasubramanyam was a great actor of yore and had inspired her very much; in fact he mentored her to take up literature as her passion as well as profession. A student of Humanities, Anuradha Ramanan enjoyed her maiden success in literature when her article, "Kanavu Malrkal Kaukumpoothu", was published in the Mangai, 1977.
Anuradha Ramanan's Literary Career
Anuradha thus took up thirty years to publisher her first writing but then matured very fast as a writer; while breathing her last she had a huge volume of texts under her name. Throughout her literary career, she has penned nearly 1000 short stories and 800 novels, which is quite unbelievable. Also, a tendency to avoid the little magazines and magazines for publication is always noticed among the celebrated writers since they mostly aim at earning a good revenue from their books. Nevertheless, Mrs. Anuradha Ramanan was an exception here tool; her generous contributions had enriched a good number of Tamil magazines.
Anuradha Ramanan's Literature on the Silver Screen
Some of her works have been taken up as cinema plots; of them we can name two films by R. C. Sakthi named Sirai and Kootupuzhukal. Oru Malarin Payanam and Oru Veedu Iru Vasal, yet a couple of her works, have been directed in the screen by Mukta Srinivasan and K. Balachandar respectively. Apart from this, a great deal of television serials have also based their stories on Anuradha Ramanan's works. A Telugu film based on her story, Oka Baarya katha, has won 5 awards. The Kannada movie Mithilaiyil seethai is also based on Anuradha's storyline.
Awards won by Anuradha Ramanan
Mrs. Anuradha Ramanan has won a number of awards and prizes, including the Rajiv Gandhi Award, The Queen of Novels award, Awards for Best Novelist, Queen of Novels, Gold Medal from Idhyam Pesukirathu and so on. In 1978, she received a gold medal for her contribution in Tamil literature from the former Chief Minister M. G. Ramachandran. Sirai, published in Ananda Vikatan, won a gold medal for the best short story.

Both of Anuradha Ramanan's daughters are happily married and settled at present at USA. She had two grand daughters and one grandson as well. Painting, music and trying out unique recipes were some of her hobbies.
