Meeting discusses steps to ease traffic congestionSpecial Correspondent
VELLORE: A consultative meeting was convened by Vellore Collector S. Nagarajan to discuss the law and order situation and traffic development in Vellore district at the Collectorate here on Wednesday. It mooted the idea of suspending the grant of fresh licences for operation of auto-rickshaws in the Vellore Corporation area to prevent traffic congestion in different parts of the city owing to indiscriminate plying of auto-rickshaws. It was pointed out that about 9,000 auto-rickshaws were plying in Vellore city.
The Collector ordered the removal of encroachments in the Makkan area of Vellore and encroachments in the forest areas of Vellore, Arcot and Gudiyatham. He also discussed the steps to be taken to widen the ghat road in the Badhrapalli area in Pernambut panchayat union to prevent accidents and the need to shift an IMFL shop of the TASMAC on a main road in Pernambut.
He also discussed the steps to be taken to allot land for the construction of a building or allot a government building to house the MLA's office in Ambur following the election of an MLA for the newly created Ambur constituency.
Mr. Nagarajan discussed the steps to be taken to ease the traffic congestion in the Green Circle by erecting speed-breakers or widening the road by reducing the size of the park. Other matters discussed at the meeting include immediate commencement of the work on the underground drainage scheme on the stretch of Anna Salai from Vellore South Police Station to Hotel Arya Bhavan junction, expediting road upgradation work in Fort Round Road, preventing erection of banners that hindered free flow of traffic, removal of encroachments on the pavements on Ida Scudder Road in front of the CMC Hospital to help pedestrians use them, and the construction of a subway opposite the hospital to ease traffic congestion in the area.

Manjunatha, District Forest Officer, Vellore, Jagannathan, Sub-Collector, Ranipet, Udayakumar, Personal Assistant (General) to the Collector, Jayashree, Revenue Divisional Officer, Vellore, Seeni Ajmal Khan, Commissioner of Vellore Corporation, Rajendran, Regional Transport Officer, and all Deputy Superintendents of Police, and representatives of the bus owners association participated in the meeting.
