Tirupur is a very important business city of Tamilnadu. The knitted garments and hoseiry, have gained universal recognition. Exports from Tirupur is a major source of foreign exchange income for India.
This is the city which gave the freedom fighter s Dheeran Chinnamalai and Tiruppur Kumaran. This district is situated near the Manchester of Tamilnadu - Coimbatore. Though this is comparitively a smaller city compared to Coimbatore, it have emerged as the major export hub and is a fast growing industrial city. It is the knit capital of world. Some of the major retailers in the world, C&A, Walmart, Tommy Hilfiger, Reebok all import textiles and clothing from Tirupur.
Inspite of the growth, the basic infrastructure needs much more improvement and thats why, this city is formed into a district with a few more Taluks from Coimbatore and Erode added to it.
The major river that flows through Tirupur is the Noyyal river and it divides the city into two halves.
The taluks of Avinashi, Palladam, Dharapuram, Kangeyam and Udumalpet along with form the District of Tiruppur with Tiruppur as district headquarters. This new district was formed in the year 2008 in the month of October.
