SASTRA University
SASTRA University, which is actually the abbreviation of Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy is one of the best research instituions in India. Located at Thirumalaisamudram in the Thanjavur district of Tamilnadu, SASTRA University provides the students with a wide array of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. A special emphasis is one engineering courses, both at the undergraduate as well as at the postgraduate level. Of late, the Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy has been granted the status of a university and has come to know popularly as the SASTRA University.

History of SASTRA University
The Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy or SASTRA University began its epoch making journey decades back in 1984. At that time it was merely a college, beginning with the engineering sector, under the nomenclature of Shanmugha College of Engineering. Later, as its scopes widened, the institution has been renamed to its present title. The university offers undergraduate and post graduate courses in Engineering, Science, Education, Management and Arts, including Doctoral programmes. The SASTRA University is the first ever Deemed University in Tamilnadu. The Srinivasa Ramanujam Centre at Kumbakonam is also affiliated to the Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy or SASTRA University.

Campus Facilities in SASTRA University
The campus of SASTRA University is constructed over a huge area. More or less 9,000 students get their education in this institution. There are excellent hostel facilities in SASTRA University. Presently there are 8 boys' hostels and 4 girls' hostels to accommodate nearly 5000 boys and 3000 girls. Also, the construction work for a new hostel is going on and wi-fi range is being widened for the entire campus. For the sport lovers, there is facility even for streaming of live matches! The SASTRA University campus has an exquisite internet centre. There are also a multimedia zone and departmental stores in all the hostels. Soon, the university will have a park too!

The library in SASTRA University is called Saraswathi Sadan. Quite aptly so, too. Saraswathi Sadan houses more than 78,000 books worth a value of Rs 3.5 crores. Also, 300 journals and periodicals are kept here including IEEE publications. Online journal database like Science Direct, IEEE, ACME, ASME, SCE, EBSCO, SCOPUS, DELNET, ebrary etc are also subscirbed to, thus providing the students with access to nearly 3200 journals and bibliographic database of over 17,000 journals.

Admissions in SASTRA University is purely based on merit. The procedure is very much transparent too. The counselling normally takes place during June or July once the Plus Two exams are finished in different boards, so that students from various boards can go for Admissions in SASTRA University.
