Ayyanar Falls, a natural water falls, a wonderful picnic spot is at a distance of 14 kms from the town of Rajapalayam.
In the district of Virudhunagar, close to the city of Rajapalayam, one can go to Ayyanar falls which is a natural water falls. The entire water fall is in a dense forest and the water falls from a height of 15 feet. The waterfalls is situated in the eastern slopes of western ghats.
The falls have shifted its origin of fall from the real original source and to reach there one should get permission from the forest department. Up to the half mark of the route one can trek, beyond that it is quite a difficult climb to reach there. It takes nearly 3 hours to climb up the dense emrald green forest to reach Ayyanar falls. It is advised to come down before 4.pm as after dark there are chances of sighting elephants and Indian Gaurs.
The route to Ayyanar Falls provides good opportunity for woodland climbing. The water fall is said to be the only source of irrigation for Rajapalayam and Srivilliputhur towns.
How the name Ayyanar Falls came:
There is a small Ayyanar temple near the falls and so the name Ayyanar falls have come.
Best time to Visit:
The ideal time to visit this place is from September to January. The nearest town is Rajapalayam and the nearest airport is in Madurai.
