Vattakottai Fort or the circular fort is a seaside fort, near Kanyakumari, in the 18th century. The fort was built as a defense fortification for the erstwhile Travncore Kingdom.
The fort was built under the supervision of Captain Eustachius De Lannoy, who after losing the Battle of Colachal against the Travancore army, won the trust of the King Marthanda Varma and became the commander of the Travancore Army. vattakottai is a part of the defense fortifications which De Lenniy undertook through out the Travancore Kingdom.
About Vattakottai Fort The fort is made of granite blocks and is a protected site of the archaeological Detartment of India at present. A part of the fort extends into the sea. The fort commands spectacular views fof both sea and the mighty western ghats. There is a massive outer wall which bears the symbol of two elephants and a conch shell above the words "Vattakottai" in English. You can even see Marunthuvazh Malai ( which is known as the Hill where medicinal herbs are grown). There was even a tunnel which was built underground from the Padmanabhapuram palace to the vattakottai fort. It was also said that in the olden days one could see the palace from the fort.
How to Reach Vattakottai Fort Kanyakumari is the nearest town just about 6 kilometers away. You can reach either thiruvananthapuram international airport in Kerala and then travel all the way either by train or by road to Kanyakumari. Madurai is another airport close to the fort but is a domestic airport in the state of Tamilnadu
