Mangadu is located in the outskirts of the city of Chennai. The temple where the Goddess Parvathi, in the form of Tapas Kamakshiamman, is situated 24 Kilometers away from Chennai, in between Kundrathur and Poonamallee, off the highway near Poonamallee.
In Mangadu Devi Parvathi is seen doing severe penance, with left leg in the Panchagni, right leg folded, right hand holding japamala over her head. Later Lord Shiva married her at Kancheepuram. The fire was not extinguished at that time and the entire area suffered from the heat for a long time. Adi Shankaracharya had to come and install Sri Ardhameru Chakram and then extinguish the fire.
This Sri Chakram is very rare in India. Only Kumkum archana is performed to the Sri Ardhameru Chakram and no abhishekams are held, as the Sri Chakram is made of Herbs. The temple was built in the place where Goddess Kamakshi performed penance. Sri Adhi Kamakshiamman in Panchalokam is installed in the sanctum snactorum of the Mangadu Kamakshiamman temple. Thousands visit to the Mangadu temple, especially on Fridays and Sundays.
