Thirunageswaram Rahu temple is located near Kumbhakonam in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. Sri Naganatha swamy is the presiding deity at the temple and is associated to Lord Rahu (Raaghu Bhagvan). This is one of the 9 important Navagraha Temples in Tamil Nadu.

About Thirunageswaram Rahu Temple near Kumbhakonam


Thirunageswaram is one of the well known Navagraha Temples located near Kumbakonam in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. Thirunageswaram is a vast temple built for the God rahu, one of the celestial bodies in the navagraha.
The belief here is that the mythological serpents Adisheshan, Dakshan and Karkodakan worshipped Lord Shiva at this place. Rahu is said to have the power of converting even ones enemy to be a friend. He is ruled by Goddess Durga and the main deity in the Thirunageswaram temple is Nageshwarar and the devi is Girigujambikai. Devi in this temple is decorated as a girl in the mornings and a young lady at the noon time Pooja and a lady in the evening poojas. Here God rahu resides with his wife and during Rahu kalam milk is poured over the idol which turns blue miraculously. Devotees who have Rahu Dosham come to Thirunageswaram during rahukalam and perform Abishekams to the God.

Sacred Theerthams in the Thiruneswaram Rahu temple


There are twelve sacred Theerthams in Thirunaageswaram, namely, Suriya Pushkarani, Kannuva Theertham, Indira Theertham, Gowthama Theertham, Prugu Theertham, Parasara Theertham and Vasishta Theertham. Suriya Pushkarani is inside the temple compound and is very sacred. The theertham is built in the style of Cholas and is made in square shape with 'double-bat' roofing. It is believed that the mythological serpents Aadi Seshan, Dakshan and Kaarkotakan worshipped Lord Shiva here at Suriya Pushkarini.

Timings of the Thirunageswaram Rahu Temple and the Daily Poojas


Thirunageswaram Rahu Temple opens daily for the morning Poojas from 06:00 am to 9:00 am, in the afternoon at 01:00 pm to 05:00 pm, and again in the evenings from 07:00 pm to 09:00 pm. The temple conducts six pujas daily Ushakkala Pooja (6 am), Kalasandhi Pooja (9 am), Uchikkala Pooja (1 pm), Sayaratchai Pooja (5 pm), Irandam Kala Pooja (7 pm) and Arthajama Pooja (9 pm). Anyone who is interested to take part in the Poojas can contact the temple authorities.

Special Poojas and Festivals of Thirunageswaram Rahu temple


Rahu switches over to next Raasi in the Zodiac, which happens once in one and half years and the movement is in anti-clockwise direction, special Abishekam with Homam is performed at Sri Arulmigu Naganathaswamy Temple. Lord Rahu is also taken in procession in Sesha Vahanam. This Pooja is performed at every change in the position of the Zodiac for Rahu
Other important festivals celebrated at Thirunageswaram are Brahmotsavam which takes place in Karthigai Masam of the tamil Calender or the mid November to mid December of the English calender, Thiruvathirai in the month of margazhi which falls in mid December to mid January, Kanda Shashti in October or November, Sivaratri february to March, Navaratri and Sekkizhar Vaikasi Pooja.

How to Reach Thirunageswaram from Chennai


You will have to reach Kumbakonam first and then take a cab or an auto to reach the Thirunageeswaram Rahu temple. You will also find local buses running from Kumbakonam to Thirunageswaram.
If you are travelling by air from abroad, it would be better for you to reach Chennai and from there either take a flight to Trichy and then travel to Kumbakonam or take a train from Chennai itself. Trichy airport is about 98 kilometers from Kumbakonam.
Thirunageswaram is located on the bus route Kumbakonam and Karaikal. The temple is just 7 kilometers from Kumbhakonam.
Chennai to Kumbakonam by Road - 285 kilomerters and takes about 5 hours drive
Trains from Chennai Egmore to Kumbakonam are Bhubaneswar to Rameshwaram Express a weekly train runs every saturday and Rockfort Express, Tirupati - Tiruchirapalli Express, Chennai – Rameshwaram Express (Sethu Express) stops at Kumbakonam railway station.
